my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-11-2013

THE COUNCIL COLLECTIVE "soul deep pt.I" b/w "soul deep pt.II" 1984

a single made up of 'left-wing' UK artists to raise monies for England's striking mineworkers for Christmas money for their kids....
unfortuantely, shortly after the recording of this single a cab-driver was killed taking a so-called 'scab' through one of the picketlines...
the CC then donated most of the monies from this to his family...
single was put together by Style Council members Mick Talbot and Paul Weller, single features guest vocals by various UK rappers from back in the day...
its not a bad song, but the 12" version is better because you get the entire song without the break of changing the disc over...
single failed to chart here

KISS "i was made for lovin' you" b/w "hard times" 1979

KISS' biggest international hit ever...
sort of a cross between rock and disco, and Stanley's falsetto vocals make this a classic track from that era of music...
"b" side is an Ace Frehley track off the "dynasty" album, its pretty good also IMO, sort of autobiographical in nature telling the story of Frehley grwoing up on the hard/tough NY streets...
single peaked at #2 here

JASON DONOVAN & KYLIE MINOGUE "especially for you" b/w "all i wanna do is make you mine" 1988

both vocalists were originally actors having the lead roles on soapy 'neighbours'..
Kylie left to pursue a singing career, and Donovan followed shortly after, so it was inevitable they would record a duet somewhere along the line...
the "a" side isnt too bad, a bit corny and sugar-coated but still okay IMO,
"b" side, well, i ha enough of the sugarcoated pop on the "a" side so i was never going to put up with that one also...LOL
single reached #2 here and #1 in the UK

CULTURE CLUB "church of the poisoned mind" b/w "man shake" 1983

loving both sides of this single...
also loving Helen Terry's back up vocals, so powerful with a gospel/soul sound...
after "victims", the "a" side here is my favourite Culture Club song...classic early 1980s IMO
single reached #4 here, should have got to #1 but who am i to say...?

love this "a" side, classic Shaky IMO,
unfortunnately though, the "b" side is what i consider a piece of shaky crap!
single failed to chart here but did make the top10 on the UK charts...

ELVIS PRESLEY "softly, as i leave you(live)" b/w "unchained melody" 1978

"a" side is a spoken word live recording from his final tour...Elvis tells a real sad story as backing singers sing behind him...great stuff!
"b" side, obviously a cover of the old classic...Elvis does a great version of this song, other than the original, this is the best version of this song i have heard!
single reached #52 here, deserved higher IMO

KEITH MARSHALL "only crying" b/w "dont play with my emotions" 1981

Keith was a former member of UK band "hello" who's claim to fame was the original version of "new york groove" back in the early 1970s...
anyway, band split up around 1980 and guitarist Marshall released a solo set.
this single has a slight Chris Rea fell happening...lovey songs on both sides here, and i find it surprising he never had more success
single peaked at #19 here...
