Jean-Luc Ponty was born on this day in 1942 in Avranches, France. He is a virtuoso violinist and composer, primarily of the jazz/fusion persuasion, something of an innovator and a frontrunner in the use of the violin/electric violin as a leading jazz instrument. Once heâd found his niche, as well as doing concurrent solo recordings, and other projects besides, he joined The Mothers of Invention and apparently, it was Frank Zappa himself who persuaded him to move to the USA.
