He was important enough to jazz as it worked it's way free of bebop-only, to rate more. His Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Evans Bro MH played his best known, maybe most important single piece but here's a few more.:

Alan Barton - died on this day in 1995 at the age of 41, in a bus crash
vocalist for Smokie
I'm cheating here as he was not a member of the band when this was done
but any chance I get to play it, I do
and there's just not enough musicians dying

So who are your favorite candidates? Maybe we can organize a Nigerian or Middle Eastern tour for them and Boko Haram or ISIS/ISIL can whack'm. Just a thought...

Bro Jerome--Just an off-the-cuff smart ass reply to what I hope was an off-the-cuff smart ass statement. I don't want anybody dying and seriously doubt Bro MH does either.

Gil Evans! A great composer has left us! I enjoyed your links Jazzy...missed Steve Lacy when he played here a few years back...he can really dig into avant garde jazz also!...great player! When I think of Gil , I always think of his collaboration with Miles namely Sketches of Spain...a very highly acclaimed composition! Shows the genius of Evans and Davis! On this track, Miles' trumpet timbre is exquisite among other good things happening!

This is a depressing thread but interesting if that makes sense. I think I remember Jan and Dean. That's bad!!
Same age as me.
I saw Buck Owens here many years ago at the high school auditorium.
