Richard Harvey was born in London on this day in 1953. I have his wonderful Concerto Antico which he composed for the guitarist John Williams. I hadn’t realised just how prolific he is, nor the high esteem in which he is held. Composer, conductor and highly skilled multi-instrumentalist, he’s a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and has, in his personal arsenal, over 700 different musical instruments from various places around the globe. From the age of four, apparently, there was never any question about what he was going to do with his life! Lucky him.

Originally with Medieval prog rock band Gryphon, he has also been a session muso for Kate Bush, Gerry Rafferty and Gordon Giltrap, had a new wave band called The Banned, and spent some time with Maurice Jarre which led to his own work on soundtracks and production music. He’s made over 80 scores for TV and film and also worked as a musician on such diverse creations as The Dirty Dozen, The Da Vinci Code, The Lion King and Harry Potter!! He’s also worked with Elvis Costello co-writing the music for a TV series, and extensively with John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra.

From a Gryphon reunion and Midnight Mushrumps which is one of the more bizarre album titles I’ve come across. Ok – so that’s Shakespearian English for mushrooms, and now it all makes sense – psychedelic seventies, lol! - [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_gr3l-GEjQ"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_gr3l-GEjQ

From his production music album Strings of Sorrow – “Hidden Forces” - [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83eLy1XDgsE"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83eLy1XDgsE

I’m including this first movement from Concerto Antico because there’s a nice write-up by the uploader and besides, it’s gorgeous - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEQ1-NOL06M

… and the third of the five movements – “Cantilena”. Great clip, I think – the artwork suits it well. Instrumental/Classical alert!!!

One for the 'to buy' list! Any idea who the artwork is by? - exquisite!

^Yes – the painter is Russian born, Alexei Butirskiy. Immensely appealing work – I wouldn’t mind having one or two of those hanging around!

His Sartorial Highness, aka Bryan Ferry (CBE), turns 70 today. Somehow, he manages to pull off everything he does with a great deal of flair and a distinctive, trademark sound, even when it’s covers. To me, he doesn’t attempt to emulate anyone, as in Dylanesque, (which I’m sure I’ve mentioned before) but rather, puts his very own spin on things. I like that album, especially his version of “Positively Fourth Street” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VW-MTglbHU.

Such an extensive discography with Roxy Music, and solo, etc., and so many great songs make it difficult to choose clips, sooo – because today is also, coincidentally, the anniversary of Robert Palmer’s death – here’s BF’s cover of “Johnny and Mary” from his latest, Avonmore – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Din_eWjJWe0

… and because Mark Knopfler makes an appearance on Avonmore too (and he’s been a little neglected lately, lol!) -

Barbara Ruth Dickson, OBE was born on this day in 1947, in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her singles will probably have filtered into most people's consciousness somewhere along the line - they seem to have always been around! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Dickson. According to wiki –“The Scotsman newspaper has described her as Scotland's best-selling female singer in terms of the numbers of hit chart singles and albums she has achieved in the UK since 1976”.

I think she mostly recorded covers, and of those, I'm best acquainted with two of Mike Batt’s songs –

The Caravan song - [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-GLqF-0Dg0"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-GLqF-0Dg0

… and whilst I prefer Roger Chapman doing this, there’s no denying the merits of her version –

Paul Burgess was born on this day in 1950, in Manchester, England. He’s a rock drummer and has been a recording or touring member (or both) of Camel, 10CC, Jethro Tull, Magna Carta, as well as done session work for Joan Armatrading and Chris Farlowe, just to drop a few illustrious names! I don’t think he has any trouble finding work.

He’s on two studio, and two live albums with Camel – from the first recording he made with them – Stationary Traveller – the title track (instrumental) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkhR1L37mt8, and for the sake of balance, a vocal – "Refugee" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6QCKXSvL2o

... and from 10cc's Deceptive Bends - (if I'm not mistaken, the second drummer is Stuart Tosh)
