I take it the Mercury years didn't last long. All of these tracks are pulled from four
different recording sessions in 1948-'49-'50. Those 3 years are probably just a small sample of
the boys work. Probably the most well known bluegrass band by the general public, only because
they provided the theme song for The Beverly Hillbillies. Amazing what a hit tv show theme can
do. That didn't happen until 1962 and brought bluegrass to the mainstream, and began the most
successfull years for the duo. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs both got their start with the
father of the genre, Bill Monroe. They decided to go it on their own and left Bills group in
1948. These must be the first recordings after that split. Twenty Eight tracks on this
compilation and that's just three years. Aside from the instrumentals, I like everything and
love nine tracks. Sad ending to the boys career. They parted ways in 1969 over musical
differences and it wasn't on good terms. Earl wanted to modernize their sound and Lester
refused. They didn't speak for years until when Lester was on his death bed and Marty Stuart,
who had joined Lesters band, talked Earl into coming to see him. It was a tearful reunion and
Lester died a week later. Earl passed away just last year.
