Currently Watching? - Thraak - 19-12-2010 ![]() After spending the entire afternoon profiling this man's work I've found myself watching this DVD once again. Jack Bruce live concert from Rockpalast, Germany circa 1980. Unfortunately, the full show isn't included on this DVD and been meaning to get the fuller version of the concert which includes 'Bird Alone'. Still, the line-up is probably one of the best in Jack's career: Jack Bruce- bass, vocals Clem Clempson- guitar David Sancious- keyboards Billy Cobham- drums Fantastic stuff! His voice is still fantastic considering hes been around forever. Although, I did see his televised performance at the 02 in London and it wasn't a patch on the gig I witnessed in Edinburgh recentley. Anyone else bought a CD only to discover two years later that it came with a DVD as well? That's what happened to me yesterday when I was flicking through my REM records and found this one. R.E.M.- Live (2007) ![]() First heard this album played almost in it's entirety during a several hour raid of the Fopp shop in Edinburgh around the time of it's release. I remember being shocked at how good REM sounded live and despite only being a moderate fan of theirs I bought this record online as soon as I got home. Recorded live in Dublin over two nights in 2005, it mainly focuses on new material from the then-recent album 'Around The Sun' which happens to me one of my favourites along with 'New Adventures In Hi-fi'- from which only one song is featured. Let-down is the too large an emphasis of material from the 'Monster' album which despite it being heralded as one of their finest, I'm not a fan of. Also they seem to neglect their early material in live concerts, especially songs like 'Radio Europe' from their fantastic debut album 'Murmur'. Best moments were 'Orange Crush' (from their 80s album 'Green'), 'The One I Love' (from their 80s album 'Document'), 'Final Straw' (from 'Around The Sun') & the excellent 'Drive' (from their 'Automatic For The People' album). Apart from a few duds, namely 'I Wanted To Be Wrong' which is a pathetic excuse for a 'protest' song IMO although it was made up for with the fantastic 'Final Straw' and 'I'm Gonna DJ' which was later released on their 'Accelerate' album in 2008 and has to be one of the worst songs I've ever heard from REM. All in all, despite the poor choice of material in some place REM do put on a good live show, have a lot of stage presence and might be worth seeing live sometime if the price isn't too high. Heres what I consider to be one of their best songs: Currently Watching? - Tiggi - 21-12-2010 I'm a bit light on late REM, so this might present an opportunity to sample the pick of it. Agree about Monster, it's not the most approachable of theirs. And do see them live if you get the chance. Great live band, and Stipe is mesmerising. |
