David Coverdale was born on this day in 1951. He has a technically great rock voice, and I really like some of what he did with Deep Purple, but other than that … well, Whitesnake never really got me – sorry David. He seems to have immense live appeal tho’ and a fabulous speaking voice – could listen to that all day, lol!!

Got to hand it to the man, he totally commands a small, intimate, acoustic setting; the naked truth, so to speak. “Is This Love” - [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rviX35Uqf6o"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rviX35Uqf6o

... and from the same venue (presumably) – they got their money’s worth IMHO - “Soldier of Fortune” …

Tony Hymas was born on this day in 1943, in England. He is a pianist, keyboard and synthesizer player and composer known for his versatility across a range of genres. He started out as a cathedral chorister before joining the Royal Academy of Music then hooked up with Jack Bruce before joining Jeff Beck with whom he collaborated for around 20 years. Amongst many other associations, jazz ensembles and the like, he was also a founder of the shortlived 80’s band, Ph.D. (P for Phillips (as in Simon), H for himself and D for Jim Diamond)

Anyone remember this??! It went to #3 in the UK – “I Won’t Let You Down” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XtzuY-nb2Q

Further evidence of the aforementioned versatility – this is his reggae flavoured composition from Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop … the album got a Grammy -

I was never a fan of Marsden, I just don't like his voice.

as a bit of trivia....
Gerry And The Pacemaker were the first artist/band to score three #1 hits in the UK with their first three single releases...
those singles were...."how do you do it", "i like it" and "you'llnever walk alone",
incidently, their fourth UK release, "im the one" peaked at #2....

the second artist/group to achieve the same feat also happened to come from Liverpool twenty years later...who were they you might ask?
Frankie Goes To Hollywood....
they achieved it with "relax", "two tribes" and "the power of love"....
incidently and eerily similarly their fourth single release also stalled at #2 in "welcome to the pleasuredome"

Jerry Donahue was born on this day in 1946, in Manhattan, NYC. Moved across the pond at some point and got embroiled in the Brit folk scene. Guitarist and singer, he was a member of Fairport Convention and also of Fotheringay, the band Sandy Denny formed when she split from FC.

Fotheringay released only one eponymous album (1970), and it’s quite brilliant, IMHO. They dug up some unreleased numbers and compiled another one thirty eight years later, but this was their only ‘studio’ album.

Donahue, who is recognised for his mastery of the string bending technique, has recorded and toured with Joan Armatrading, Elton John, Gerry Rafferty, Robert Plant, Chris Rea … the list is endless. He’s also a member of instrumental rock trio, The Hellecasters. From Wiki – “… an American guitar group. Composed of Nashville session players Will Ray, John Jorgenson (Desert Rose, and Elton John’s backup band), and Jerry Donahue (Fairport Convention), they all play modified versions of the Fender Telecaster as their main instruments. Their name, it has been speculated, comes from a pun, wherein they claim to play the hell out of their Telecasters.” Needless to say, he has a couple of signature Fenders.

Two favs from Fotheringay – their sublime cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Way I Feel” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUeTVLZoMeg

… and “Nothing More”, the lead track. Beautiful arrangements on this album – and I really like Gerry Conway's drums ...
