Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 09-03-2013

#353 - Big Brother And The Holding Company - Piece Of My Heart - 1968

running recap for me - 3's=82, 2's=54, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Cheap Thrills
Written by Bert Berns, Jerry Ragovoy
Produced by Bob Keane
Chart action: #12 US

the players:
Janis Joplin - vocal
Peter Albin – Bass
Sam Andrew – Guitar
James Gurley - Guitar
David Getz - Drums

First done by Aretha Franklin's sister Erma, in '67. It charted in the top 10 on the r&b side,
but it wasn't until Janis and crew took it on, that it became a pop hit. Faith Hill brought in
back in 1993 with a country flavor. Now we need a techno version.

Lyrics

Oh, come on, come on, come on, come on!

Didn't I make you feel like you were the only man - yeah!
An' didn't I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can ?
Honey, you know I did!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I've had enough,
But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.

I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it if it makes you feel good,
Oh, yes indeed.

You're out on the streets looking good,
And baby deep down in your heart I guess you know that it ain't right,
Never, never, never, never, never, never hear me when I cry at night,
Babe, and I cry all the time!
But each time I tell myself that I, well I can't stand the pain,
But when you hold me in your arms, I'll sing it once again.

I'll say come on, come on, come on, come on and take it!
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby.
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah,
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good.

I need you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, c'mon now.
Oh, oh, have a
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby.
You know you got it - whoahhhhh!!

Take it!
Take it! Take another little piece of my heart now, baby,
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Oh, oh, have a
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, hey,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good.

Now that's what i'm talking about. Janis Joplin, too bad drugs destroyed her life. She never felt pretty and forgot that her voice was her beauty!

Music Head Wrote:#354 - Ritchie Valens - La Bamba - 1958

running recap for me - 3's=81, 2's=54, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by William Clauson
Produced by Bob Keane
Chart action: #22 US, #49 UK

the players:
Ritchie Valens - guitar, vocal
Carol Kaye - bass
Earl Palmer - drums

Love the music but the lyrics were all spanish to me. A traditional mexican wedding song that
came out first as the b-side to Ritchie's first hit, Donna. This follow up single hit the chart
just two weeks before the plane crash that took Valens and Buddy Holly's life. The song was
redone in 1987 by Los Lobos for the film La Bamba, which was the story of Ritchie Valens. It
bested Ritchies by hitting #1 in both the US and UK. Funny note about this song being sung in
spanish. Ritchie Valens was raised speaking English, having to learn the song lyrics
phonetically. ???

Lyrics

Para bailar La Bamba
Para bailar La Bamba
Se necessita una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia
Para mi, para ti, ay arriba, ay arriba
Ay, arriba arriba
Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan
Soy capitan, soy capitan
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba, bam

Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba.

#352 - Lavern Baker - Jim Dandy - 1956

running recap for me - 3's=82, 2's=55, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by Lincoln Chase
Produced by Ahmet Ertegun,Jerry Wexler
Chart action: #17 US

the players:
Lavern Baker - vocal
other people playing things

My dad used to sing this. I guess that's why I couldn't love it. Not knowing who did it back
then, I thought it was a man. I figured it out when I saw the name. It is also my mothers name.
I never heard mom sing it. Not much history about the song. Probably Lavern's biggest hit. She
was even more popular on the r&b charts where this hit the top. Also became a minor hit for
Black Oak Arkansas in 1973. I guess vocalist Jom Dandy felt obligated to do it.

Lyrics

Jim Dandy to the rescue
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Jim Dandy on a mountain top
30,000 feet to drop
He's got a lady on a runaway horse
Uh huh, that's right, of course
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Jim Dandy met a girl named Sue
She was feeling kind of blue
Jim Dandy he's the kind of guy
Never liked to see a little girl cry
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Jim Dandy to the rescue
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go

Jim Dandy had a submarine
Got a message from my mermaid queen
She was hanging from a fishing line
Jim Dandy didn't waste no time
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Jim Dandy wanted to go to Maine
Got a ticket on a DC plane
Jim Dandy didn't need no suit
He was hip and ready to boot
Jim Dandy to the rescue
Go, Jim Dandy
Go, Jim Dandy

Go, go, go Jim Dandy
Go, go, go Jim Dandy
Go, go, go Jim Dandy
Go on, Jim Dand
Jim Dandy, go
