#357 - Isley Brothers - That Lady - 1973

running recap for me - 3's=80, 2's=54, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: 3 + 3
Written by Isley Brothers
Produced by Isley Brothers
Chart action: #7 US, #14 UK

the players:
Ronald Isley - lead vocals
Ronald Isley - Rudolph Isley and O'Kelly Isley, Jr.: background vocals
Ernie Isley - guitar and percussion
Marvin Isley - bass and percussion
Chris Jasper - piano, keyboards
George Moreland - drums, percussion
Truman Thomas - organ

This is just ok for me. Weak lyrics, fuzz guitar gets old, nice funk though. First recorded ten
years earlier, the original group brothers decided to dig it out after recruiting 3 new members
for an actual band. The Santana inspired guitar solo was considered the highlight. Sort of a
latin feel in addition to the funk gave it a new sound for the group.

Lyrics

Who's that lady? Who's that lady?
Beautiful lady, who's that lady?
Lovely lady, who's that lady?
Real fine lady, who's that lady?

Hear me callin' out to you
'Cause it's all that I can do
Your eyes tell me to pursue
But you say look yeah but don't touch, baby
Nah, nah, nah don't touch

Who's that lady? Who's that lady?
Sexy lady, who's that lady?
Beautiful lady, who's that lady?
Real fine lady, who's that lady?

I would dance upon a string
Any gift she'd wanna bring
I would give her anything
If she would just do what I say
Come 'round my way baby, shine my way

Who's that lady? Who's that lady?
Beautiful lady, who's that lady?
Lovely lady, who's that lady?
Real fine lady, who's that lady?

I would love to take her home
But her heart is made of stone
I would keep on keepin' on
If I don't she'll do me wrong
Do me wrong, yeah

#356 - Elton John - Candle In The Wind - 1973

running recap for me - 3's=81, 2's=54, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Goodby Yellow Brick Road
Written by Elton John, Bernie Taupin
Produced by Gus Dudgeon
Chart action: #11 UK

the players:
Elton John - piano, vocals
Dee Murray – bass
Davey Johnstone – guitar
Nigel Olsson – drums
Ray Cooper – tambourine

Absolutely loved this when it was released on GYBR. Not so much after it was turned into
Diana's theme song. As long as we're clear on that, I'll still give this a love. A tribute to
Marilyn Monroe was how it was written and what it should have stayed. The original version was
not released as a single in the US. The song was redone in 1997 and became the biggest selling
single of all time. A live version from an Australian concert was also released in 1986 which
was also a hit. So different versions of the song have bee released 3 times, all becoming hits.
I guess we can call this Elton's signature song. No doubt when Elton passes, it will be
rewritten by someone as his tribute.

Lyrics

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

#355 - Dr. Dre And 2Pac - California Love - 1996

running recap for me - 3's=81, 2's=55, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Greatest Hits
Written by Dr. Dre, Chris Stainton, Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, 2Pac
Produced by Dr. Dre
Chart action: #1 US

the players:
Dr. Dre - vocal
2Pac – vocal
Roger Troutman - vocal
Sean Thomas - keyboards
Carl Small - percussion

Liked it except for the auto tune stuff. 2Pac had just got out of jail and Dr. Dre had this hit
ready for him. Got nominated for a posthumous Grammy. This track was never on a 2Pac studio
album, as it was intended for Dr. Dre's album which was shelved for some reason. Joe Cocker
song is heavily sampled on the track. Did not know that.

Lyrics

California love!

[1:]
California... knows how to party
California... knows how to party
In the citaaay of L.A.
In the citaaay of good ol' Watts
In the citaaay, the city of Compton
We keep it rockin! We keep it rockin!

[Verse 1: Dr. Dre]
Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west
A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness
The track hits ya eardrum like a slug to ya chest
Pack a vest for your Jimmy in the city of sex
We in that sunshine state where that bomb ass hemp be
The state where ya never find a dance floor empty
And pimps be on a mission for them greens
Lean mean money-makin-machines servin fiends
I been in the game for ten years makin rap tunes
Ever since honeys was wearin sassoon
Now it's '95 and they clock me and watch me
Diamonds shinin lookin like I robbed Liberace
It's all good, from Diego to tha Bay
Your city is tha bomb if your city makin pay
Throw up a finger if ya feel the same way
Dre puttin it down for
Californ-I-a

[1]

[2:]
Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it mama
Shake it Cali
Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it shake it shake it...

[Verse 2: 2Pac]
Out on bail fresh outta jail, California dreamin
Soon as I stepped on the scene, I'm hearin hoochies screamin
Fiendin for money and alcohol
The life of a west side playa where cowards die and it's all ball
Only in Cali where we riot not rally to live and die
In L.A. we wearin Chucks not Ballies (that's right)
Dressed in Locs and khaki suits and ride is what we do
Flossin but have caution we collide with other crews
Famous cause we program worldwide
Let'em recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans
Bumpin and grindin like a slow jam, it's west side
So you know the row won't bow down to no man
Say what you say
But give me that bomb beat from Dre
Let me serenade the streets of L.A.
From Oakland to Sacktown
The Bay Area and back down
Cali is where they put they mack down
Give me love!

[1]

[Dre:] Now make it shake...

[2]

[Outro: Dre, 2Pac]
Uh, yeah, uh, longbeach in tha house, uh yeah
Oaktown, Oakland definately in tha house hahaha
Frisko, Frisko
[Tupac:] Hey, you know LA is up in this
Pasadena, where you at
Yeah, Inglewood, Inglewood always up to no good
[Tupac:] Even Hollywood tryin to get a piece baby
Sacramento, sacramento where ya at? yeah

Throw it up y'all, throw it up, Throw it up
Let's show these fools how we do this on that west side
Cause you and I know it's tha best side

Yeah, That's riight
West coast, west coast
Uh, California Love
California Love

#354 - Ritchie Valens - La Bamba - 1958

running recap for me - 3's=81, 2's=54, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by William Clauson
Produced by Bob Keane
Chart action: #22 US, #49 UK

the players:
Ritchie Valens - guitar, vocal
Carol Kaye - bass
Earl Palmer - drums

Love the music but the lyrics were all spanish to me. A traditional mexican wedding song that
came out first as the b-side to Ritchie's first hit, Donna. This follow up single hit the chart
just two weeks before the plane crash that took Valens and Buddy Holly's life. The song was
redone in 1987 by Los Lobos for the film La Bamba, which was the story of Ritchie Valens. It
bested Ritchies by hitting #1 in both the US and UK. Funny note about this song being sung in
spanish. Ritchie Valens was raised speaking English, having to learn the song lyrics
phonetically. ???

Lyrics

Para bailar La Bamba
Para bailar La Bamba
Se necessita una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia
Para mi, para ti, ay arriba, ay arriba
Ay, arriba arriba
Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan
Soy capitan, soy capitan
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba, bam

Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba.
