^Thanks for that! Beats the Bublé - he has some fine birthday company.

Otis Redding was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. His legacy is quite remarkable for someone who only lived to the tender age of 26. He died in a plane crash on December 09, 1967. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis_Redding

His The Dock of the Bay was the first posthumous album to top the UK charts; the title track, which was written by Steve Cropper and himself, was recorded just three days before that tragic accident –

Eddie Vedder does a fair job of it too, IMHO - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpxz6mI6cOA

on the Otis Redding...
I heard some trivia on the radio yesterday about "dock of the bay"....
the song was apparently unfinished when he took that flight that took his life..
and the whistling part at the end was supposed to be another verse but he hadn't written it so he whistled it to remind him he needed to write another verse and that
was going to be his priority when he returned home from the flight...unfortunately that didn't happen and the version we have is how the story ends.

1950 Don Powell,
drummer for UK Glam Rock band Slade....
Slade were the first artist to have three singles to debut on the UK charts in the coverted #1 position..
they ended up with a total of six #1 hits in the UK....
their Christmas single "merry Christmas everybody" has re-entered the UK charts on no less than 30 occasions
over the festive period in the last forty years, making it the biggest selling Christmas song in UK chart history...

I don't need an excuse to play Slade as theyre probably my favourite band from that period so here goes....

Tommy Shaw was born on this day in 1953, in Montgomery, Alabama. He joined Styx in 1975 going on to play a pivotal role in their success. He wrote and sang lead on a number of their most successful singles as well as playing guitar and mandolin. He leads the present incarnation of the band of which he and James Young are the only remaining ‘original’ members.

Paul Kossoff was born on this day in 1950. He died in 1976, at the age of 25, on a plane, from heart related problems brought about by heroin abuse.

Best known as lead guitarist for Free, he got some weighty recognition, despite his youth and obvious substance abuse problems. He recorded a solo album, was one of four of a shortlived group and contributed to others as a sought after session muso after the breakup of Free. He was a friend of Jim Capaldi’s, working on Oh How We Danced, and Capaldi purportedly wrote this song with him in mind … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbXDJYud3uQ.

Free’s Fire and Water is probably their best known album, specifically for “All Right Now”, but I prefer this, which, incidentally, was co-written by Paul Rodgers and Kossoff ….
