Bill Nelson - Blue Moons & Laughing Guitars

Bill Nelson used to be the main man in odd UK 70s rock band Be Bop Deluxe, before embarking on a career path of soundscapey instrumental music.

This album consists of the home demos Nelson made in preparation for forming another rock band. The band never came to fruition, so the tapes have been released as they are.

Interesting, but fairly light Alt Rock.

Bryan Ferry - Let's Stick Together - 1976

Granted most of the material is not alt, but Bryan has always been for me. Roxy Music wasn't enough for Bryan. He needed side projects. This was his third effort consisting mostly of covers and Roxy remakes. The album reached #160 on the charts, with the single Heart On My Sleeve reaching #86. It's obvious Ferry considered himself a song stylist, as he did a lot of covers on his early solo material. Back then Bryan Ferry was one of those artists that could probably have released an album of farts and I would have bought it. This isn't necessarily an album of farts, but did consist of a lot of gas. Remakes aren't really my thing. No problem re-doing the Roxy Stuff, but Beatles, stay away.

I like this album.

Favorite Track - Sea Breezes

I´ve been thinking
now for a long time
How to go my own separate way
It´s a shame to
think about yesterday,
It's a shame
Now that we are lonely
Life seems to get hard
Alone what a word - lonely
Alone it makes me cry
Thought-train set in motion
Wheels in and around
Express our emotion
Tracks up, then it cracks down
We´ve been running
round in our present state
Hoping help would come from above
But even angels there make
the same mistakes
In love

Timbuk 3 - Edge of Allegiance

Another album I haven't listened to for some considerable time.

Husband & wife duo who specialised in sharp sardonic songs about life, ecology, politics, the universe, & everything. Lots of acoustic guitars, some atmospheric harmonica, and well-programmed drum machines.

Worth checking out...

Nick Lowe And His Cowboy Outfit - The Rose Of England - 1985

Not much cowboy about this effort. Sure, the rockabilly roots are evident but cowboy?. The band tag comes from the previous album title but was dropped after this one, Lowe's seventh. No singles charted here and the album reached #119. Indoor Fireworks is a beautiful song, but after all, that belongs to Elvis. My album has a different cover and sequence but the tracks remain the same. Maybe it's a U.S./U.K. thing. My cover is the one pictured in track #6. Neither cover is very appealing.

I like this album.

Favorite Track - The Rose Of England

Taking nothing but his daddy's old bone-grip knife
He traded but a little for the wayward life
A faint heart never won fair hand
So says the Rose of England

From high on a hill came the clarion call
To gain young men, come one, come all
Make muster 'gainst the foreign hand
That's raised to the Rose of England

For her feckless boys she did weep and wail
Saying, Lord have mercy where did I fail?
Out of my belly, the pick up a gun
And fall for the Rose of England

God knows it's a cold outside
It's a fire by day and a freeze at night
I know it's a hell out there
How loud the mouth when the heart don't care

He's damned if he don't, and damned if he do
He'd die if he ever found out we knew
Hot potato, drop it and run
Far from the Rose of England

He's all over the place at the moment - the power of marketing will probably compel me to give this a listen though I quite like him in any case.

Huh, I haven't noticed. I just like his previous album and I found this single out there in the ether.
