What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-08-2014

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ROOTS "wise up ghost...and other songs 2013" cd, 2013

album stats: #28 UK, #40 AU, #16 US

singles:
"walk us uptown"............no chart action
"stick put your tongue"....no chart action

studio album #30 since 1977 for Costello...
an unlikely pairing of elvis and r+b/funk/hiphop/roots band The Roots...
album came about by pure accident...
Costello had performed on the Fallon show in 2009 and Fallon's studio band The Roots backed up Costello...
on the way back tot he dressing rooms after the show one of The Roots guys said something like "we gelled pretty well together,we should do something together", Costello said "yeah"...
four years later Costello called the band and said..."lets see what happens", apparently the roots had around 4000 snippets of their music and sent a couple to Costello..he wrote the lyrics to those and demoed the songs...The Roots sent a few more to him and so on...before too long they were all in the studio laying down the tracks...
album is very rootsy/funky and a bit jazzy/bluesy also..
best tracks on here for me are the more subdued slower numbers...
lyrics by Costello hold up well with his back catalogue showing just how great a writer he still is after almost forty years of making recorded music...
and unlike a number of others in the industry whose best work is behind them after a decade or two in the industry Costello still keeps churning out quality material at a prolific rate...
all up though...i dont think this album is a good place to start building your Costello collection, but its still pretty darn good!
