Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 26-02-2013 #363 - Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives - 1977 running recap for me - 3's=76, 2's=52, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: My Aim Is True Written by Elvis Costello Produced by Nick Lowe Chart action: #15 UK, #35 Australia, #60 Canada the players: Elvis Costello - guitar, vocal Steve Goulding - drums Andrew Bodner - bass Steve Nieve - keyboards Elvis came along at a time when I was in one of those music dead periods. Disco was coming in and I was tuning out. Then came Elvis and Joe Jackson. I was refueled. For this track Elvis says he had just listened to the Clash's debut album for 36 hours straight, then wrote this. It was his first UK hit single, and once again america lags behind, failing to chart here. Even Australia and Canada gave it a shot, but not here. Lyrics Nice girls not one with a defect, cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct. Red dogs under illegal legs. She looks so good that he gets down and begs. [Chorus:] She is watching the detectives. "ooh, he's so cute!" She is watching the detectives when they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. They beat him up until the teardrops start, but he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart. Long shot of that jumping sign, Visible shivers running down my spine. Cut the baby taking off her clothes. Close-up of the sign that says,"We never close" You snatch a tune, you a match a cigarette, She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet. I don't know how much more of this I can take. She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake. [Chorus] You think you're alone until you realize you're in it. Now fear is here to stay. Love is here for a visit. They call it instant justice when it's past the legal limit. Someone's scratching at the window. I wonder who is it? The detectives come to check if you belong to the parents who are ready to hear the worst about their daughter's disappearance. Though it nearly took a miracle to get you to stay, it only took my little fingers to blow you away. Just like watching the detectives. Don't get cute!" It's just like watching the detectives. I get so angry when the teardrops start, but he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart. Watching the detectives. It's just like watching the detectives. Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-02-2013 "***" from me.....but u guys already knew that Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 27-02-2013 #362 - Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven - 1992 running recap for me - 3's=77, 2's=52, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Rush (soundtrack) Written by Eric Clapton, Will Jennings Produced by Russ Titleman Chart action: #2 US, #5 UK, #1 Canada, #37 Australia the players: Eric Clapton - guitar, vocal other people playing things Hard to not love this knowing the circumstances around it. Think I would love it even more if it was just Eric and the guitar (MTV Unplugged). A lot of backing instruments on this single version, which I think the song is better without. The song was released on a soundtrack album for the film Rush, which I don't remember, but I may have seen. The follow up single release brought Eric his biggest hit plus 3 grammy's. Lyrics Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven? I must be strong And carry on, 'Cause I know I don't belong Here in heaven. Would you hold my hand If I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand If I saw you in heaven? I'll find my way Through night and day, 'Cause I know I just can't stay Here in heaven. Time can bring you down, Time can bend your knees. Time can break your heart, Have you begging please, begging please. Beyond the door, There's peace I'm sure, And I know there'll be no more Tears in heaven. Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven? I must be strong And carry on, 'Cause I know I don't belong Here in heaven. Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 27-02-2013 i think Eric really poured his heart out when he wrote this one(well,it appears that way anyway) great, great track IMO, and like you i also prefer the "mtv unplugged" version,i also prefer the "mtv" version of "layla" oops, back to the track at hand...."***" from me Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 28-02-2013 #361 - Elvis Presley - All Shook Up - 1957 running recap for me - 3's=78, 2's=52, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: various compilations Written by Otis Blackwell, Elvis Presley Produced by Steve Sholes Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK the players: Elvis Presley - vocal other people playing things This was the last song that the king got a share of the writing credit for. Stayed at the top of the Hot 100 chart for 8 weeks. Also topped the r&b chart which I think is strange. Song was actually recorded first by David Hill. No explanation as to how that came about. Didn't know Billy Joel recorded this for the film Honeymoon In Vegas and it was released as a single, hitting the chart in 1992. Probably best I haven't heard that. Lyrics A well I bless my soul What's wrong with me? I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug I'm in love I'm all shook up Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! My hands are shaky and my knees are weak I can't seem to stand on my own two feet Who do you thank when you have such luck? I'm in love I'm all shook up Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! Please don't ask me what's on my mind I'm a little mixed up, but I'm feelin' fine When I'm near that girl that I love best My heart beats so it scares me to death! She touched my hand what a chill I got Her lips are like a volcano that's hot I'm proud to say she's my buttercup I'm in love I'm all shook up Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! My tongue get tied when I try to speak My insides shake like a leaf on a tree There's only one cure for this body of mine That's to have the girl that I love so fine! She touched my hand what a chill I got Her lips are like a volcano that's hot I'm proud to say she's my buttercup I'm in love I'm all shook up Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah! I'm all shook up Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-02-2013 "***" from this end mate.....as expected i guess?! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 01-03-2013 #360 - Platters - The Great Pretender - 1955 running recap for me - 3's=79, 2's=52, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: various compilations Written by Buck Ram Produced by Buck Ram Chart action: #1 US the players: Tony Williams - lead vocal Zola Taylor - backing vocal Paul Robi - backing vocal Herb Reed - backing vocal Joe Jefferson - backing vocal other people playing things One of the first doo-wop groups I remember. Always as impressed with the backing vocals as the lead. The first r&b vocal group to top the pop chart, with their second single. Written by the band's manager. Their career was just beginning. Had no idea Freddie Mercury had a UK hit with this song in 1987. Good vocal on it but a stupid camp video. But that's Freddie. This Platters video is from the film Rock Around The Clock and it's excellent. Lyrics Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender Pretending that I'm doing well My need is such I pretend too much I'm lonely but no one can tell Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender Adrift in a world of my own I've played the game but to my real shame You've left me to grieve all alone Too real is this feeling of make-believe Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal Yes, I'm the great pretender Just laughin' and gay like a clown I seem to be what I'm not, you see I'm wearing my heart like a crown Pretending that you're still around Too real is this feeling of make-believe Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal Yes, I'm the great pretender Just laughin' and gay like a clown I seem to be what I'm not, you see I'm wearing my heart like a crown Pretending that you're still around Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-03-2013 another "***" for me also... im going to look through all the posts here on the weekend and keep a tally of loves, likes, dislikes and see how they compare to yours after 500 posts Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 01-03-2013 i loved Freddie Mercury's version back in the day also Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 02-03-2013 Not one of my favorite Elvis songs.
