AMERICA "homecoming" cd,1973.

yes guys i do own several of America's albums...its just that overall i think they are an over-rated group...
and radio absolutely overkills them down this way which is why the opening track 'ventura highway' gets a dislike score from me here...i swear if i hear that track again im going on a shooting spree somewhere!
apart from that track on this one, i love just about everything else....very CSNY in places, which is why they are in the folk section and not classic rock(they are generally 'folk-rock' IMO)...
great harmonies and melodies here(up with CSNY's 'deja vu' album).
also did a bit of background research on this album and was surprised to find that of three singles to be released off this one that the highest US position was for "dont cross the river" and that peaked at #35 over there...also strange to note that 'ventura highway' failed to make the US charts at all...very strange indeed???, it did however hit the top 10 here in Australia and did make the UK charts peaking at #43...one of only three singles by these guys to touch the UK market.
that aside i do love this album, it is by far my favourite of theirs.

BREAD "bread" cd,1969.

folk-rock debut from David Gates and Company....
i own five of their albums(bought them in a 5cd boxset),
probably the worst of the five IMO, guess they hadnt honed their skills at this stage, but it does contain the clssic "it dont matter to me" which only charted in the US, coming in at a peak of #10, the album however, faired much worse by only peaking at #127, strange how an artist can have a major top10 hit that doesnt generate album sales, but whatever, not a bad collection of tracks overall...

SLIM DUSTY "cattle camp crooner" cd,1969.

will the real slim dusty please stand up.....
not sure how many albums he had released by 1969 but he went on to record over hundred by time he died in 2003, and was already a twenty-four year veteran of recording by time this one came out....
Aussie country guy, but not the "oh lonesome me", "tear in my beer" type artist....
slim usually wrote little dittys about the life he led,the life he saw others lead in the great outback of australia and re told the stories he heard on those travels...often slightly humourous in nature, and more than often with a twist of irony, but never blue and depressed.
Slim was to Aussie country what Hank Snr and Jimmy rogers were to US country....pioneering architects of the genre.
not a bad album by any means from a veteran of the industry...

Only have two Seeger albums I can recall. An essential set plus this one that I think I picked
up from a library sale. It was well played before my aquisition. This is from the Folkways
label so you know it's real folk music. Stripped bare, just Pete and either his banjo or
guitar. Bummer that only three tracks here are Seeger originals. Best for me is Get Up And Go,
a bit of the humorous side. Probably the only well known song here is We Shall Overcome which
became a civil rites anthem of the 60's. Much better as a live sing along, as are most of Petes
songs. These songs are mostly about peace and love and stuff, when what the world needs is some
good war songs.

One from the new stack which shall soon be replenished. Most know Buck from Hee Haw. Yes I
watched it, but just for the music. Come on man, I wouldn't lie about that. This is volume 1 of
a 2 volume set. Now I'm out on a limb as to whether to go for volume 2, which of course
includes one of my favs with Cryin' Time. Other good ones on that one but I think this one has
more of the hits. Buck along with Merle Haggard cornered the California country market. After
Buck found success, he refused to cave and relocate to Nashville. He did it his way. The man
passed in 2006 but lives on in my house.

What Are You Listening To? - Waylonfan - 29-12-2012

'Luckenbach, Texas,' by the late great Waylon Jennings & anything connected with him! I've seen his YouTube concert videos a trillion times! Heaven didn't know what hit them when the last outlaw got there!
