THE AVETT BROTHERS "the carpenter" cd,2012.

bought this one the other week and put it near the top of my 'to play' pile of cd's...
all i own of theirs apart from this one is their superb "i & love & you"....that one is destined to be a classic album in the annuls of music history, so i was a bit hesitant in buying anything else as i didnt want to be dissapointed, i need not have worried though, as this new offering is as good as,if not better than that one IMO...
not as varied in style or sound as that one, moreso, concentrating on the straight folky pop that they excell at...
remember that track from a while ago called "breakfast at tiffany's"?...well, this album has the same sort of feel as that song,so love that track-love this album!
half the album here gets a love rating of "***", the rest are almost as good, a great, great album that will be unlucky if not in my end of year "best albums" list

My weekly dive into the new stack. It's actually starting to get low. Picked this up after me mate did the
same on our road trip last year. One car listen was all it took to get on my list. A 2 disc set with 24
tracks. Didnt have any George gospel. Not sure he even has any other. Recorded a mere 10 years ago, when
his voice was still there. Maybe not quite as smooth as those earlier days, but he still had it. I think
George had sobered up by this point. Not that he couldn't sing when he wasn't. Some of these tracks I'm
very familiar with, others not at all. Like my favorite, When Mama Sang. Classic George there. He should
have recorded this type of music long before this. Guess he wasn't in the gospel frame of mind back in
those crazy days. The album made #19 on the country chart. Still a lot of diehard Possum fans out there.
Well, one anyway.

George is my favourite country artist!

What Are You Listening To? - Nick Dilley - 08-12-2012

This seems to be the appropriate area to note that I am listening to "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" at the moment.

And, btw, it's lovely.

Hey, im new to this!
I recently discovered Jesse Will, Singer-Songwriter from New Zealand. He's just getting started but reminds me of Jeff Buckley, Ben Harper, Bob Dylan, I think hes got potential.

GENE PITNEY & GEORGE JONES "the complete duet recordings 1965" cd, 2006.

a duets album by two giants of the music industry(well, giants isnt the right word i guess as Pitney's career on the charts wasnt really that long).
obviously, as the title suggests, these are the recordings these guys made together in 1965...
ive never really been a fan of Pitney, and Jones, well, im only just getting into him, so i wasnt really sure how these tracks would pan out....
i need not have worried though as this is a very good collection of pop-cum-country songs, i have heard several of these tracks before by other artists but im not sure if these versions are covers or the originals...either way, it doesnt matter, some very good stuff on here, and was also surprised to find that several of these actually made the Billboard Country charts.

JOHNNY CASH "america:a 200 year salute " cd,1972.

another Cash concept album(as at least half his albums are)...
this one is a brief US history lesson from the revolutionary Paul Revere, through the "movement west", the civil war,President Garfield's assassination, the civil war, the Alamo, Custer's last stand, through to the early 1900s,
each track is short and concise, around 2 minutes, and each track is accompanied by Cash's commentary of the song he is about to sing, which means the album lasts a little over 30 minutes in length...
a great short history lesson in song and verse, and without a doubt my favourite Johnny Cash album of 'all-time'
