I love Spooky Tooth too. My favourite album is Spooky Two, with Better By You, Better Than Me.

I'm currently listening to Jeff Healey's See the Light album (1988) prompted by Confidence Man being stuck in my head for some reason. Eighties blues rock (Jeff Healey, Robert Cray, SRV) is a strange thing, having a traditional approach, but over produced with loud drums and lots of reverb. What stands out is Healey's guitar solos. Sitting with the guitar flat on his lap, he was able to get plenty of vibrato, making the Fender buzz and scream like no-one else. He was very gifted and also played trumpet, releasing at least one jazz album to my knowledge. Sadly, as if blindness wasn't enough, he had cancer, from which he died in 2008. Another album I would like to hear again is the soundtrack to Road House, a Patrick Swayzee film, in which Healey appeared while also recording See the Light, and on which his contributions stand head and shoulders above everything else.

I agree Big Ears! I truly miss Jeff, Canadian boy from Toronto. He hosted a great CBC radio show for awhile featuring old style traditional jazz and big bands. I loved that show...I think his true love was jazz.

Mr. Healey was a modern master of an old instrument, the lap steel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lap_steel_guitar << 2 other masters are Robert Randolph and Sonny Rhodes. It has a "feel" like no other.

Could very well be. Besides Austin and Nashville, it's hard to think of a great music town that's not on traversable water--San Francisco, NYC, New Orleans, Liverpool, Hamburg...Big water brings diverse musical influences and different, more accepting audiences. And even those odd 2 were great gathering points for influences. My view anyway

Perhaps because it's Canada's largest city and centrally located. Vancouver on the Pacific and Montreal with both French and English music are also vibrant. Arcade Fire and Godspeed You! Black Emperor are from Montreal and Matthew Good is from Vancouver. Halifax was once coined the Seattle of Canada for its' abundance of alternative bands and grunge in the 90s...Sloan came from that music era...they have had considerable success as well as Wintersleep who are much bigger in Europe!

That's what I was thinking. I've heard of the bands you mention, but it's the traditional ones that I know. Pat Travers and Max Webster. inc. Kim Mitchell, are underrated imo.
