my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013

JET "rollover dj" and "are you gonna be my girl(live)" b/w "take it or leave it(live)", "sgt major" and "back door santa" 2003

Jet's third single release...
this one is a 12" single, containing five tracks, my copy is still sealed in its original shrinkwrap wrapping as a collectors item so
apart from the first three tracks, i will be listening to the last two online for the first time...
"sgt major" has a distinct Oasis feel to it whilst "back door santa" is a cover of an old blues song(think i have BB King doing it??)
single reached #32 here...

my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013

STYLE COUNCIL "shout to the top" and "the piccadilly trail" b/w "shout to the top(instrumental)" and "ghosts of dachau" 1984

another 12" single for today...
"shout to the top"...catchy song, but not up to Weller's standard for my liking now
"the piccadilly trail"...tinges of soul and jazz happening on this classy song
"instumental"...same as the "a" side only no vocals
"ghost of dachau"...sublime piece of writing IMO, up there with Weller's greatest recordings IMO
single made it to #9 here

if there is one link you click on to today, then "ghosts of dachau" is the one....
it was written after Paul Weller visited the Dachau museum in the late 1970s...Dachau was a Nazi concentration camp...this song is harrowing to say the least...
i visited Auschwich in 1984 and the song really does sum up those horrific place better than i ever could describe them, so i beg you to listen to the Ghosts Of Dachau.

What can I say,,,one of the best known songs in history and a good one to boot!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:BOOMTOWN RATS "i dont like mondays" b/w "its all the rage" 1979

Q: what changed in the last thirty-five years?
A: nothing, except dozens more school masacres in the US....!
this one was written by Geldof after the first US school shooting, the title comes from the shooters own mouth, when asked by police why she shot up the school with her fathers high powered rifle from across the street her reply was "i dont like mondays"...
this "a" side would without a dount be in my list of top20,even top10 songs of all time...
these guys had talent, but unfortunately for them this was really the only hit they had outside the UK...
"b" side is more uptempo, sort of punk-meets-new wave, its good in its own right...
single topped the charts here

Two good songs!...I enjoyed them!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:WINGS "mary had a little lamb" b/w "little woman love" 1972

McCartney and Wings had just had their previous two singles banned by the BBC.."give ireland back to the irish" with its pro-irish political messages, not neccessarily pro IRA,but pro-irish...and "hi hi hi" with its sex and drug lyrics...!
Macca litterally spat the metaphoric dummy and recorded this children's nursey rhyme and said "lets see them ban this then!"...obviously they couldnt, i guess he thought he was above censorship being an ex-Beatle" and should be allowed to flaunt the rules and expect do be able to get away with anything!
ya know what, i do like this version of that nursey rhyme...i love the "b" side though which by all accounts had been hanging around for a couple of years but didnt fit on any album up to that point...
single did chart here peaking at #17

Uplifting song...I like it!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:B.A.D aka BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE "just play music" b/w "much worse" 1986

ex-Clash guitarist and occasional vocalist Mick Jones' latest project...
band mixes dance/raggae/pop and samples to their unique brand of music(well, it was unique then, and ahead of its time!)
i like both of these tracks, infact, i like this band in general...
single failed to chart here

Unmistakable signature sound...I like them!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:BONEY M "hooray!,hooray!, its a holi-holiday" b/w "ribbons of blue" 1979

these guys could do nothing wrong by me with their music...
great tunes,harmonies,pop/reggae/dance beats...
liking the "a" side but loving the "b" side...strange really, as the "b" side was regarded as the "A" side in the UK,making it a double-a side single
single peaked at #7 here

Good hard drivin blues reminiscent of Canada's Colin James!!!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:BIG PIG " big hotel" b/w "fine young" 1988

Aussie seven piece pop outfit...
nice pop stuff happening on the "a" side...
very little to like with the "b" side IMO

ALVIN STARDUST "pretend" b/w "goosebumps" 1981

Alvin was a UK part-time singer,part-time actor through the 1970s/80s...
this "a" side is a cover of the old Nat King Cole single...
not sure if the "b" side is a cover or not, but it sounds like it could be...
single reached #4 in the UK and #36 here
