Branford Marsalis, jazz/classical/whatever it suits him to try - saxophonist was born on this day in 1960, in Louisiana. A well-known surname in the jazz world – his father and three brothers are all musicians. He’s been the leader of his own quartet and worked with brother Wynton, as well as his other brothers, and plenty more musos besides – one of them Sting, with whom he’s played extensively.

Playing a piece from the gorgeous Bachianas Brasileiras of Villa-Lobos – [URL="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_5ph6vlYGI"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_5ph6vlYGI

And a very plaintive sax it is on this track which was written as a symbolic protest against Pinochet’s regime - “The song is a metaphor referring to mourning Chilean women (arpilleristas) who dance the Cueca, the national dance of Chile, alone with photographs of their disappeared loved ones in their hands.” From Sting’s Nothing Like the Sun which also features the guitars of Eric Clapton, Fareed Haque, aaannnd ... tada! .... the inevitable Mark Knopfler! LOL!

1956 Glenn Matlock
lead guitarist for The Rich Kids and Sex Pistols....

here's the Sex Pistols(hell, I don't need an excuse to play these guys!)
this song made it to #1 on the UK charts, but because the BBC didn't want to irritate the Royal Family the #1 position on the charts
in the UK was left blank for that week...therefore there was no 'official #1' that week!

The Barefoot Diva – Cesária Évora, was born on this day in 1941 in São Vicente, Cape Verde. She rose to global notice and popularity only in 1988, primarily in Europe. Also dubbed the ‘Queen of Morna’ – morna being the national music of Cape Verde which is much like the fado is to Portugal. She died in 2011.

She was something of a phenomenon – a larger than life character with a truly amazing voice that appeals across language and age barriers (in my experience). You don’t need to know the words she’s singing – ok, maybe the title, just as a clue - but if you listen well, it is clear that she had a completely natural talent and ability to make you feel, using voice and intonation, exactly what the lyrics intended.

I particularly love this song that she sings with Tenerife native, Pedro Guerra - and here is a rough translation:

Tiempo y Silencio / Time and Silence

A house in the sky
A garden in the sea
A lark in your chest
A return to the beginning

A wish of stars
A sparrow's heartbeat
An island in your bed
A sunset

Time and silence
Screams and songs
Heaven and kisses
Voice and grief

To be born in your laugh
To grow in your weeping
To live on your shoulder
To die in your arms

Daniel ‘Danny’ Seraphine, drummer for Chicago was born on this day in 1948, in … Chicago. He was a founding member and remained with the band from 1967 right up until 1990. He left them after recording Chicago 19.

He now does drum clinics and tutorials, and is also a record and film producer and an endorser of drumsticks and other things drum related – not at all short of fans. Have to say, I have quite enjoyed trawling around and watching a few clips of him doing his thing – he’s what they call a ‘lyrical’ drummer and I can see where that expression comes from.

Presently the drummer for his band, California Transit Authority (CTA) – they’ve released two albums to date. This is from their debut, Full Circle, covering Chicago’s “Make Me Smile” (audio and instrumental) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z8hcpgv0ts

… but I’m sure most people can sing along to this one, even although it’s from waaaay back when ….

Julio Fernandez was born on this day in 1954, in Havana, Cuba. He’s into his third decade as guitarist for jazz fusion giants, Spyro Gyro – took over from Chet Catallo in 1984. A condensed bio here, from their website - http://www.spyrogyra.com/bandbios.html.

“Del Corazon”, is his beautiful composition, complete with dreamy intro – from their 1987 release, Stories Without Words. He is one nimble guitarist! …

Ismaël Lô was born on this day in 1956. He is a Senegalese musician and actor – great to listen to, even not understanding the lyrics, but I don’t see that he’s been that active recently – at least not in releasing albums; he seems to tour quite a lot and is regarded as a pioneering West African superstar. He plays harmonica and guitar.

He sings in French and also in any number of other dialects that Google has difficulty translating – best guess I can arrive at is Yoruba, Wolof and Swahili, and probably a whole lot more besides, hence the search engine’s confusion! I gave up.

His musical style is mbalakh/mbalax – “…a fusion of popular Western music and dance such as jazz, soul, Latin and rock blended with sabar, the traditional drumming and dance music of Senegal. The genre's name derived from the heavy use of accompanying rhythms used in sabar called mbalax.”

If I could find my CD I would offer the lyrics to this track, which I have forgotten, but alas the CD has gone walkabout (along with my memory!) – “Nafantav” from 1994’s ISO … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C54Icl03DI

And this lovely song is from the 2001 album, Dabah, - sung in French – the repeating chorus line is “Love has all rights, and we all duties” if that helps to shed any light on the subject!
