my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 BOOMTOWN RATS "i dont like mondays" b/w "its all the rage" 1979 Q: what changed in the last thirty-five years? A: nothing, except dozens more school masacres in the US....! this one was written by Geldof after the first US school shooting, the title comes from the shooters own mouth, when asked by police why she shot up the school with her fathers high powered rifle from across the street her reply was "i dont like mondays"... this "a" side would without a dount be in my list of top20,even top10 songs of all time... these guys had talent, but unfortunately for them this was really the only hit they had outside the UK... "b" side is more uptempo, sort of punk-meets-new wave, its good in its own right... single topped the charts here "i dont like mondays" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Kobdb37Cwc vevo video "its all the rage" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLfr5l0BFRA audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 WINGS "mary had a little lamb" b/w "little woman love" 1972 McCartney and Wings had just had their previous two singles banned by the BBC.."give ireland back to the irish" with its pro-irish political messages, not neccessarily pro IRA,but pro-irish...and "hi hi hi" with its sex and drug lyrics...! Macca litterally spat the metaphoric dummy and recorded this children's nursey rhyme and said "lets see them ban this then!"...obviously they couldnt, i guess he thought he was above censorship being an ex-Beatle" and should be allowed to flaunt the rules and expect do be able to get away with anything! ya know what, i do like this version of that nursey rhyme...i love the "b" side though which by all accounts had been hanging around for a couple of years but didnt fit on any album up to that point... single did chart here peaking at #17 "mary had a little lamb" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaZ9s7S26qg video "little woman love" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R5hgKUlUWQ audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 B.A.D aka BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE "just play music" b/w "much worse" 1986 ex-Clash guitarist and occasional vocalist Mick Jones' latest project... band mixes dance/raggae/pop and samples to their unique brand of music(well, it was unique then, and ahead of its time!) i like both of these tracks, infact, i like this band in general... single failed to chart here "just play music" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDwY87UP1zI video "much worse" ** no link available my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 BONEY M "hooray!,hooray!, its a holi-holiday" b/w "ribbons of blue" 1979 these guys could do nothing wrong by me with their music... great tunes,harmonies,pop/reggae/dance beats... liking the "a" side but loving the "b" side...strange really, as the "b" side was regarded as the "A" side in the UK,making it a double-a side single single peaked at #7 here "hooray!,hooray! its a holi-holiday" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJkrA6DtDgQ video "ribbons of blue" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2POKr9-MY8 video my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 BIG PIG " big hotel" b/w "fine young" 1988 Aussie seven piece pop outfit... nice pop stuff happening on the "a" side... very little to like with the "b" side IMO single peaked at #37 here "big hotel" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKhWzNLi1HI video "fine thing" * no link abailable my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 PETER BLAKELEY "crying in the chapel" b/w "caterina" 1989 New Zealand white-soul singler... this was his only hit here...lots of Mick Hucknall(simply red) sounds happening on the "a" side, i loved this one when it was released and i still love it! "b" side probably proves why he only had one hit! single reached #2 here, should have gone all the way to the top IMO "crying in the chapel" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RoSP1mY2fU tv performance "caterina" * no link available my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 BARRY BLUE "hot shot" b/w "hobo man" 1974 found this one at a secondhand record fair at some point...i boughtit because it was a memoery from my childhood in the UK... lots of those typical glam 1970s sounds here ala Gary Glitter feel(and i dont mean little boys neither, i mean music!) "b" side isnt too bad neither single failed to chart here "hot shot" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu6zNAOJT2k audio "hobo man" ** no link available my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 BLUE RONDO a la TURK "me and mr.sanchez" b/w "sarova" 1981 shortlived UK pop group..sounds on here("a" side") have a distinct cuban/mambo/latino feel to it, good stuff band must have been influenced by many styles of music to pull htis one off successfully, they even took their name from a Dave Bruebeck track... "b" side,i shut my eyes and imagine these sounds being playe by a band at a Turkish Bazaar, brings back vivid memories of being in that part of the world on holiday back in the nid 1970s when i was still young(amazing how some things stick with you, i can remember turkey, malta, casablanca like it was yesterday sometimes!) single actually reached #68 on our charts "me and mr.sanchez" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IV6Pa-r7JE video "sarova" ** no link available my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 SHAKIN' STEVENS "stuck on elvis pt.I" b/w "stuckon elvis pt.II" 1981 this single was only released in two countries for some reason(Germany and here), strange really, what with his huge popularity all over europe at that time.. single is a recording of a medley of Elvis Presley songs from the 1950s... songs were apparently recorded during his time performing on an Elvis stage show in the 1970s... its okay,it sounds authentic/true to Elvis but nothing beats the original King... single failed to chart here. "stuck on elvis I" ** "stuck on elvis II" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB5POEITX2c audio(both sides of single) my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 14-11-2013 MADNESS "yesterday's men" b/w "all i knew" 1885 this single, well, "a" side would probably be my favourite Madness "a" side, a more mature sounding group on this one, not the so-called 'nutty-boys' from North London. "b" side is in a similar vein to the "a" side and much better than the usual rubbish that goes on their "b" sides single reached #54 here, which was a surprise to me as i cant recall it ever charting here even though it did get a lot of airplay back in the day! "yesterdays' men" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJFMYoz4Uuw video "all i knew" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LMB1BoGQGg audio |
