What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 10-05-2011 ![]() French pianist and his (usually) trio, take famous Classical works from assorted composers and transcribe them into their Jazz forms. This comp collects together some of the best of his numerous JS Bach translations. If you're familiar with the originals it's interesting to hear how the band stretch and bend them into pieces which sound as if they were written as Jazz works. A refreshing listen. Not scored on AllMusic. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 21-05-2011 ![]() From 1973. Pete Townshend rounded up an all-star band (see album cover) and managed to coax EC out of a two-year heroin trough for a couple of dates, and this live album captures the gigs. Loads of Clapton's good stuff - from pre-1973 - and whilst this is not well critically regarded, it still makes for a solid album. AllMusic 3/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 21-05-2011 Clapton's performance on this was well below par. Still recovering I suspect. What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 22-05-2011 Joanna Newsom's 3 disc Have One on Me...very hypnotic and beautiful ! I was thinking about JN just yesterday, and have put her on the Listen List. There was some discussion around her Have One on me album on here some time ago. Haven't heard that one, but have the previous release Ys. What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 31-05-2011 from my library (cd) ![]() Brought to my attention by someone here and I don't remember who. A live performance clip was posted and I was sucked in. Canadian teen sensation, but not the teeny-bopper kind. This now 17 year old girl had to have been raised on jazz/big band. That's what she does best. Have a feeling she could do pop just as well. Here's hoping she doesn't get pulled in that direction. She did do a song for High School Musical 2, so we may be doomed. A few pop leanings here, but a lot of covers of jazz standards, with some originals also. Must be a big Ella fan as she had a tribute album prior to this one and does a lot of scat singing. This is a good album, but I must admit Nikki comes across better in those live performances than on record. Just the stage presence of someone so young I think. Seems like a veteran of many years. Legendary Phil Ramone picks up the production chores here. No surprise that the album did much better in Canada than elsewhere making #5 on their charts. Commendable covers, but we didn't really need another Over The Rainbow or God Bless The Child. Can't come close to the originals, or even BS&T's version of the latter. Other than that, oh Nikki you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind. Just cool to see someone this young doing this style of music. I LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Over The Rainbow Best Track - Bienvenue Dans Ma Vie Bienvenue dans ma vie Tout est brillant ici It's warm inside My door is open wide Don't stand outside... [Chorus 1:] You can see from far away It's a kind of place you'd like to stay, Kick off your shoes, Forget your strife There's a light on in a heart Leading to a place Where you can fall and rest your head Close your eyes, Welcome to my life. Everything is full of light Il fait gris dehors Ne t'inquiète pas, mon amour Plein de couleurs dans mon coeur [Chorus 1:] You can see from far away It's a kind of place you'd like to stay, Kick off your shoes, Forget your strife There's a light on in a heart Leading to a place Where you can fall and rest your head Close your eyes, Welcome to my life. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 17-06-2011 ![]() As recommended by Soulman. 1959 release from the second of two SBWs from the Blues world. An excellent Blues album with Williamson's classy harp playing all over it. The backing band includes such Blues luminaries as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, & Otis Spann. Includes a second disc filled with his '50s singles for the Trumpet label. AllMusic 4+/5 stars. |
