my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013

BILLY BRAGG "waiting for the great leap forewards" b/w "wishing the days away(live)" and "sin city" 1988

Bragg at this time could still do no wrong IMO...he was to my generation as was Dylan was to his generation...we all hung on every word he sung/warbled...
"a" side mixes up politics with media control, even to pop music...he is a great wordsmith IMO
"b" side, track one, a live version of an older love song and track two...a cover of an old folk song
single failed to chart here

if there is one track you listen to today from my posts then the "a" side is the one IMO

I have always enjoyed Billy! His songs for the most part are very good! I love Wilson's great cover of Hey Jude, Kirsty McColl 's voice, Style Council, Boney M ...lot here to like!

I like these songs, good Christmas happy time tune and then a powerhouse rocker!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:SHAKIN' STEVENS "merry christmas everyone" b/w "with my heart" 1986

Shaky had more top10 hits in the UK in the 1980s than anyother UK male artist...
this is his second yuletide release(ive already posted "blue christmas" here)...
its ok,lighthearted yule stuff...
"b" sound has a distinct Jerry Lee sound to it, like that one also
i dont think this single was released here as i got my copy imported from the UK...

Nice to see Dusty! Good song...second song unavailable here!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:PET SHOP BOYS & DUSTY SPRINGFIELD "what have i done to deserve this?" b/w "a new life" 1987

this single bought Dusty back into the UK charts for the first time in quite a few years...
i like this "a" side, actually think Pet Shop Boys were quite clever at what they did...
"b" side is strictly Pet Shop stuff, typical sounds happening here...i really should get an album of theirs one day!
single reached #1 on the UK charts but could only manage #22 here

Watch That Man is really quite good!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:LULU "the man who sold the world" b/w "watch that man" 1974

from "to sir with love" almost a decade previously, Lulu returned with an unlikely David Bowie cover...
i like this version...Bowie sings backup vocals on here and plays the sax also...i do prefer both Bowie and Nirvana's version over this one but its till pretty good.
"b" side is another Bowie song, written specifially for Lulu apparently...Bowie provides harmonies on here also
single topped the UK charts but only made #81 here...

[INDENT]ERIC CARMEN "hungry eyes" b/w "where are you tonight" 1987

secind single from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack...ive never seen the movie so i cant say what it is like.
i like Eric's "a" side here, the "b" is sung and credited to a guy called Tom Johnston...former lead vocalist for Doobie Brothers,
in fact i like it better than the official "a" side
single peaked at #4 here, im pretty sure it would have done the same without a movie connection also

KIM CARNES "crazy in the night(barking at the moon)" b/w "oliver" 1985

more famous for her 'bette davis' eyes' song which i dislike immensely...
but i like this single...pretty sure it was a theme song from a movie but i cant recall which movie???
"b" side is also pretty good IMO,again, better than that stupid bette davis crap!
single only made it to #21 here, deserved much higher though

BELINDA CARLISLE "heaven is a place on earth" b/w "we can change" 1987

former Go-go's vocalist with her debut solo single...
good poppy stuff, but not quite as poppy as her former band's singles, but still pretty good...
"b" side, well, i dont like that one which is dissapointing as i did like Go-Go's back in the day also
single made it to #2 here, but thats where it stalled and also, her career on the charts stalled here also after this one, which is a shame as she did have a couple more good singles from memory...

THE HOUSEMARTINS "caravan of love" b/w "when i first met jesus" 1986

this was a christmas #1 hit in their homeland(UK)...
the guys disbanded after this hit and became Beautiful South who were also pretty big in the UK, one member however, became huge worldwide...his name?...Norman Cook who is better known as DJ/MC Fatboy Slim...
this single(both sides) are performed acapella, and i mean true acapella, not the crap they call acapella nowadays...lovely harmonies on this one,up there with CSNY, Beach Boys and Fleet Foxes...
this is one of my favourite "a" and "b" side combinations in my collection of singles...great stuff!
as i wrote before, this one was a #1 hit in the UK, but only managed #24 here, it did however stay in the top 40 for 21 weeks, so it did sell quite well

DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER "dancin' in the street" b/w "instrumental version" 1986

a cover of the old Martha Reeves & The Vandellas' soul classic...
this is bloody brilliant IMO, better than the original...
collaboration came about for the Live Aid concerts in 1985...both Mick and Dave wanted to do sonething to raise extra money for the charity show...
they performed this one on stage together at Wembley Stadium, then recorded it and had it out as a single...
great, great collaboration from two of the best in the business...
single made it to #1 here
