Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 15-02-2013

oh yeh...as a footnote,
\in Pete Townshend's autobiography he mentions that the first recorded version in the UK was actually by his father who was an accomplished muso in his own right!

No, Peter Brown in the Ballad of John and Yoko is the assistant to Brian Epstein. The other Pete Brown collaborated with Cream as a song writer...White Room, Swalbr, Sunhine of Your Love, I Feel Free.
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:im not a huge Cream fan, but i do love "white room"...

a question....is the Pete Brown mentioned, the same one who Lennon mentions in "ballad of John and Yoko"???....shame Gryphon isnt here to answer that one!

I don't really like this song and a little baffled as to why it's on the Top 500...The BeeGees have much better songs!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:"**" from me also, a good song but not upto their best material

Now you're talkin' man! Unchained Melody would probably be on my Top 100! As CH said a true 'classic" ...such a beautiful song!

#373 - Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited - 1965

running recap for me - 3's=69, 2's=49, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Highway 61 Revisited
Written by Bob Dylan
Produced by Bob Johnston
Chart action: did not chart

the players:
Bob Dylan - vocal
other people playing things

That damn whistle thing holds me back on this one. It's just spine tingling. Al Kooper's
suggestion. Lyrics are superb of course. It was a b-side to Can You Please Crawl Out Your
Window which was a non studio album track. Highway 61 runs from Bob's home in Duluth Minnesota
down to New Orleans. Covered by Johnny Winter in 1969 minus the whistle and it's much better. A
lot of musicians on this album so I'm not sure who is playing what.

Lyrics

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What ?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done ?"
God says. "Out on Highway 61".

Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said there's only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61.

Well Mack the finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red white and blue shoe strings
And a thousand telephones that don't ring
Do you know where I can get ride of these things
And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to Highway 61.

Now the fift daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things weren't right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light he says hmmm you're right
Let me tell second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61.

Now the rowin' gambler he was very bored
He was tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
We'll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61.
