Phil Lynott was born on this day in 1949 in Staffordshire, England. He died at the age of 36 – a casualty of the excesses of the rock n roll lifestyle. Pity – he was a very definite character, with talent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Lynott

Frontman and founder of Thin Lizzy, he also worked with a host of other muso’s – most notably ex-Lizzy bandmate Gary Moore – he did some vocal duty on the fabulous “Parisienne Walkways” which he co-wrote - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkIhCgyljD4.

He also co-wrote and recorded on Moore’s Run for Cover album, shortly before his death. This was a big hit for them both - “Out in the Fields” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsKpazeA5L8. Another superb track from that album – “Military Man” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENXwt7Hu-xg.

And from Solo in Soho (which speaks for itself) – his ode to Elvis (with the omnipresent Mark Knopfler on guitar!! How does MK get around like that? Lends new meaning to guitar god!) –

Everything Mark Knopfler is associated with is class.

James Taylor - Sailing to Philadelphia
Bob Dylan - Infidels
Emmylou Harris - All the Roadrunning
And your post above.....

He brings a sense of class and impeccable production to everything he is involved with. A rare bird indeed.

well there you go....
you learn something new everyday....
I never knew Knopfler was on "kings call".

I think we ALL realised just how good Knopfler really was when he blew us away with "making movies" and then "love over gold",
both of those albums actually make so-called legends like Beatles,Stones etc look like complete novices!

"telegraph road" would have to be one of the greatest songs ever written IMO

1938 KENNY ROGERS

thinking about it I could have picked any one of about ten hits to post, but this was the first that came to my mind...

1952, Joe Strummer
singer, songwriter, guitarist, The Clash, (1979 UK No. 11 single 'London Calling', 1982 US No. 8 single 'Rock The Casbah, 1991 UK No.1 single 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go', first released 1982 plus 15 other UK top 40 singles). Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. He died on 22nd December 2002.

the track I pick to post was a "B" side of the "this is England" singles from their final album "cut the crap"...that album was crap, but this song
encompasses everything good about Joe....its punky, reggae tinged with a rip-rousing fist pumping chorus...
it also happens to be one of my favourite Clash tracks.

Steve Smith – born on this day in 1954, in Whitman, Massachusetts. Drummer and percussionist – he was with Journey in the early eighties, with another brief stint later on, and is a member of the Modern Drummer HoF.

Having started playing at the age of nine, he’s also done the rounds! Played with such diverse musicians as Focus, Mariah Carey, Jean-Luc Ponty, Neal Peart, Bryan Adams, and numerous jazz ensembles.

I happen to like this, from Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean –

Roland Orzabal was born on this day in 1961, in Portsmouth, England. He is of Spanish-Basque descent on his father’s side.

Chief songwriter/producer of the very well-known and successful new-wave band, Tears for Fears, as well as for others, he won two Ivor Novello Awards, the first for Songwriter of the Year, in 1986 and the second for Best Selling UK Single 2003 ( for "Mad World" which was covered on the soundtrack of Donnie Darko) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFsHSHE-iJQ. Oh, and he’s written a novel too.

Curt Smith did lead vocal duty initially, but Orzabal took that on too – nothing wrong with his voice. He was responsible for the discovery and promotion of Oleta Adams – a lady with a really great voice – she sings on their "Woman in Chains" –
