What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 10-09-2011 JONI MITCHELL - MINGUS (1979) I wasn't sure where to put this album post - jazz or folk forum ? I decided folk as the album is a bit of both and this post would be noticed moreso than in the jazz forum. This is one of the most unusual collaborations in music - Folk Goddess meets Jazz Giant !!! A few months before the passing of jazz legend Charles Mingus, Joni Mitchell approached him to ask if she could work with him on an album. There must have been a mutual admiration club here because Mingus agreed. So the collaboration of sorts began with an ailing Mingus in the studio as an arranger and director of sorts. Unfortunately he passed away before the final cut of the album was completed. What we have here is a sort of Mingus Tribute album weaved by Mitchell and three members of the jazz fusion super group - Weather Report along with keyboard icon Herbie Hancock. Joni writes all the lyrics to these original jazz instrumentals and the outcome is a joyous yet respectfull salute to Charles Mingus ! All lyrics by Joni Mitchell; music by Mitchell, except where indicated 1."Happy Birthday 1975" (Rap) – 0:57 2."God Must Be a Boogie Man" – 4:35 3."Funeral" (Rap) – 1:07 4."A Chair in the Sky" (Charles Mingus) – 6:42 5."The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey" – 6:35 6."I's a Muggin'" (Rap) – 0:07 7."Sweet Sucker Dance" – 8:04 (Mingus) 8."Coin in the Pocket" (Rap) – 0:11 9."The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" (Mingus) – 3:21 10."Lucky" (Rap) – 0:04 11."Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (Mingus) – 5:37 Personnel: •Joni Mitchell - guitar, vocals •Jaco Pastorius - bass, horn arrangement on "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" •Wayne Shorter - soprano saxophone •Herbie Hancock - electric piano •Peter Erskine - drums •Don Alias - congas •Emil Richards - percussion I have always admired and loved this unique collaboration ! I bought it on vinyl as soon as it came out ! My rating - 5/5 (AllMusic rating 3.5/5...what do they know...) The album cover below is one of many paintings of Mingus by Mitchell ! True admiration from Joni ! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 11-09-2011 ![]() On the laptop. 2011 album from French/Nigerian singer. The music is a mixture of singer-songwriteriness with some Jazz, Soul, & Reggae influences. I was expecting a more "World Music"ish sound, but she sings mostly in English, and the music is almost predominently western-sounding, although there's always a slightly exotic African feel lurking somewhere. This is fresh, original and absolutely compelling music. The intelligent lyrics wrestle with some contemporary themes, and her voice is a lovely thing. Can't pick anything not to like here. A fabulous album that'll queue-jump its' way close to the top of the Buy List. Not scored by AllMusic. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 13-09-2011 ![]() The Dualers live at the Indigo2 last year, released in 2011. Mail ordered after seeing them live. Yet more Dualers. Mostly their own material, with a few choice Ska covers, and a Ska version of Coldplay's Miss You. Very good live album. No mention on AllMusic... What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 14-09-2011 ![]() On the laptop. Second album from Roots Reggae vocal harmony group, backed by the Roots Radics, from 1980. High quality Reggae album from a group that have never really had the recognition they perhaps deserve. Jamaica has produced many, many good vocal harmony outfits, but this lot are definitely amongst the better ones, and the Roots Radics are a very good Reggae backing band. Similar in many ways to the mighty Bob Marley & The Wailers. Another for the Buy List. AllMusic 4+/5 stars. Crazy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj47FIgIVyY The merger of country and punk has a long, irascible history, a plainspoken chronicle of everyday outsiders from the Knitters to Hank Williams 3 trying to find their place in a world that doesnât deal well with surly bad girls or boys who speak their minds. Lydia Loveless, a 21-year-old Ohio singer-songwriter, joins that rowdy tradition on her second album and first for Chicago-based Bloodshot Records, âIndestructible Machineâ (Bloodshot). She conveys toughness, tenderness and humor with off-handed conviction. What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 24-09-2011 from my library (cd) The bands fifth full length and the first to crack the charts at #134. They didn't make my radar until 2009's I And Love And You, so I am playing catch up, working backwards. And I will catch up. Can't say enough good things about this band. The music that's in my bones. First listen of this did not have the impact of I And Love And You, and after about 5 spins now, it still hasn't. But after each play, it grows more. Has reached 5 tracks that I love and nothing I don't at least like. Live clips kick ass, showing they love what they do. Favorite was a tough call with Shame nudging out The Ballad Of Love And Hate. These guys blend so many styles of music to come up with their own brand. Let's just hope making it to the mainstream doesn't ruin them. That last album brought them to the masses without selling out. There is always that accusation when a band makes it. Can't say there was much difference betwen this one and that one, yet something clicked with the music buying crowd. Glad to see the boys get their due. I LOVE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Go To Sleep Best Track - Shame Okay so I was wrong about My reasons for us fallin' out Of love I want to fall back in My life is different now I swear I know now what it means to care About somebody other than myself I know the things I said to you They were untender and untrue I'd like to see those things undo So if you could find it in your heart To give a man a second start I promise things won't end the same Shame, boatloads of shame Day after day, more of the same Blame, please lift it off Please take it off, please make it stop Okay so I have read the mail The stories people often tell About us that we never knew But their existence will float away And just like every word they say And we will hold hands as they fade Shame, boatloads of shame Day after day, more of the same Blame, please lift it off Please take it off, please make it stop I felt so sure of everything My love to you so well received And I just strutted around your town Knowing I didn't let you down The truth be known, the truth be told My heart was always fairly cold Posing to be as warm as yours My way of getting in your world But now I'm out and I've had time To look around and think And sink into another world That's filled with guilt and overwhelming Shame, boatloads of shame Day after day, more of the same Blame, please lift it off Please take it off, please make it stop And everyone they have a heart And when they break and fall apart And need somebody's helping hand I used to say just let 'em fall It wouldn't bother me at all I couldn't help them now I can 1) Die Die Die ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3MIcb3MxQw 2) Shame *** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I83llca5mf0 3) Paranoia In B Major ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X1nmKyiU6s&ob=av2n 4) The Weight Of Lies *** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxHw5e1H10A 5) Will You Return? ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWTUqjtnVkY 6) The Ballad Of Love And Hate *** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cTJV3HK-Xs 7) Salina *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g5xsccIVHs 8) Pretty Girl From Chile ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APTRog2gPjI 9) All My Mistakes *** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDQc6SMNwgY 10) Living Of Love ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CIcWrCAl_c 11) I Would Be Sad ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKNAfTowygA 12) Pretty Girl From San Diego ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxmjNF-9yeE 13) Go To Sleep ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWKRrnqB8gA 14) Hand Me Down Tune ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFofMqFem8Q 3's - 5 2's - 9 1's - 0 Grade - 2.4 so many albums, so little time What Are You Listening To? - TraceNspace - 24-09-2011 I agree with everything you said but my favorite track is 'The Weight of Lies'. ^^^ What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 24-09-2011 TraceNspace Wrote:I agree with everything you said but my favorite track is 'The Weight of Lies'. ^^^whew! at least I gave it *** What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 24-09-2011 ![]() i-Pod listening in the garden this PM. Ms Lang's third album, from 1988. This must be her most authentic Coutry release, made in Nashville with Owen Bradley, and featuring Brenda Lee, Kitty Wells, and Loretta Lynn sharing the vocals on the album closer. Her voice is as beautiful as ever, and more than a match for some of the great covers included. Fine album. Allmusic 5/5 stars. |
