my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 KIRSTY McCOLL "a new england" b/w "patrick" 1985 Kirsty is best known for her 1987 christmas hit with the Pogues... this "a" side was written by Billy Bragg and pop-ified for Kirsty...i like this version,Bragg's original is best though i especially love the line "i saw two shooting stars last night, i wished on them but they were only satellites", typical Bragg stuff! "b" side is okay also, typical mid 1980s UK pop IMO single failed to chart here... "a new england" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4c2kO5ZE38 video "patrick" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6QP2FqhJ1o audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 PET SHOP BOYS & DUSTY SPRINGFIELD "what have i done to deserve this?" b/w "a new life" 1987 this single bought Dusty back into the UK charts for the first time in quite a few years... i like this "a" side, actually think Pet Shop Boys were quite clever at what they did... "b" side is strictly Pet Shop stuff, typical sounds happening here...i really should get an album of theirs one day! single reached #1 on the UK charts but could only manage #22 here "what have i done to deserve this?" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn9E5i7l-Eg vevo video "a new life" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yz4w0ZK58Y audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 SHAKIN' STEVENS "merry christmas everyone" b/w "with my heart" 1986 Shaky had more top10 hits in the UK in the 1980s than anyother UK male artist... this is his second yuletide release(ive already posted "blue christmas" here)... its ok,lighthearted yule stuff... "b" sound has a distinct Jerry Lee sound to it, like that one also i dont think this single was released here as i got my copy imported from the UK... "merry christmas everyone" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeyHl1tQeaQ vevo video "with my heart" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAI9IC40SNs audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 WILSON PICKETT "hey jude" b/w "search your heart" 1969 pretty sure i picked this one up as a second hand single,after-all i loved Pickett and Pickett doing one of my favourite songs was a must IMO... "yeh, i actually like his rendition of the Beatles classic, incidently released around the same time as theirs...i guess the guy had balls to try to outsell the Fab Four with their own song at the same time... "b" side is a typical Pickett soul ballad... single only reached #61 one here back in the day "hey jude" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apdCgfr05rU audio "search your heart" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoYKZWrGYbs audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 THE STYLE COUNCIL "have you ever had it blue?" b/w "mr.cool's dream" 1986 taken from the "absolute beginners" soundtrack... this 7" radio edit version is okay, but nowhere near the classof the complete version found on the 12" single... "b" side is an instrumental, with keys guy Mick Talbot fiddling around with his organ...very jazzy/bluesy in the Dave Brueback style single failed to chart here but did make the top10 in the UK "have you ever had it blue?(7" radio edit version)" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRGnXprimbg vevo video "mr.cool's dream" * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X1AMm0f5gw audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 THE STYLE COUNCIL "my ever changing moods" b/w "spring, summer, autumn" and "mick's company" 12" single 1984 7" contains a shortened radio edit of the "a" side and track three... i love the full complete "a" side version here,"like the acoustic folky "spring" thing, and dislike the Mick Talbot token instrumental... the good thing with Weller 12" singles is that he 99% of the time gives the listener three or four tracks, not remixes, not instrumental versions of the hit "a" side, but actual value for money, which is probably the reason i still buy his singles to this day... single reached the top5 in the UK but only #29 here "my ever changing moods" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo0lMI7bynE audio "spring summer autumn" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l9bEbnOd1A audio "mick's company" * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCDbTFxDmTA audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 LULU "the man who sold the world" b/w "watch that man" 1974 from "to sir with love" almost a decade previously, Lulu returned with an unlikely David Bowie cover... i like this version...Bowie sings backup vocals on here and plays the sax also...i do prefer both Bowie and Nirvana's version over this one but its till pretty good. "b" side is another Bowie song, written specifially for Lulu apparently...Bowie provides harmonies on here also single topped the UK charts but only made #81 here... "the man who sold the world" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyFAnA9oPRE video "watch that man" ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNi6VIlNRrA audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 MICHAEL JACKSON "got to be there" b/w "maria(you were the only one)" 1971 pure natural talent IMO.... his vocal ability at such a young age is without peer, thus both these tracks are loved by me! great stuff from The King Of Pop,normally i dont post live clips for the singles thread, but Michael thoroughly deserves to be the exception here if only for the classy performer he was. single only made it to #83 here...but he made up for that blemmish many times over the next twenty-five years or so! "got to be there" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1ODaEq9n3Y live "maria(you were the only one)" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGGH1ITHOgI audio my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 JOHNNY HATES JAZZ "heart of gold" b/w "leave it up to me" 1988 geez, i had totally forgotten about these guys...and i wish they had remained forgotten... i really cant understand why i ever bought this piece of crap, but i did so therefore i did like this "a" side enough at one time... "b" side is even worse IMO...a dud single, maybe i should put it in the oven and make an ashtray out of it...LMAO single only got to #87 here "heart of gold" * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQYzDU7RJEg vevo video "leave it up to me" * no link available my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-11-2013 BONEY M "rivers of babylon" b/w "brown girl in the ring" 1978 i love these guys immensely...you know they released a christmas album many years ago and its probably the best album of that genre i have ever heard back to the single... i love everything about this group, from the music, thru the melodies, vocals and harmonies...sublime pop IMO so obviously its no surprise that i love both sides of this single...not sure whether i have one or two more, either way, im looking foreward to them coming out of the stack at some point! single did here what it did everywhere else...it was a big fat #1 hit "rivers of babylon" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FgDles4xq8 video "brown girl in the ring" *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmTvwOc0wI0 audio |
