Confused on the publication date here. I guess 2000 is it, but these memoirs were written in 1972. Many references to that. Can't imagine why it sat unpublished for 40 years. This is the environmental wacko Al Gores daddy. Probably overall more liberal than the son. Served in both the house and the senate for 30 years, defeated in 1970. Seems like a fairly honest politician, but then that's his perspective. Stood up for what he believed in. The book is good in that it attempts to layout politics in the south from the civil war forward. Why people felt the way they did. Nice views on the civil rights movement and Vietnam war in the 60's.

Given to me by a nurse at my last VA visit. When given something I always feel obligated. Got a feeling she just wanted to dump this one. Set around the year 1000 in Afghanistan area. Some travelers armed with swords set out to kill bad guys. Seemed like one of those tales of swashbuckling adventure, for the boy in all us men. Always hard to get my head around living in those days. I would think you had to be there. Maybe Chabon was, after some indulgence of mind altering chemicals.

CH DOn't know if you have read 'Inside Out' yet. Nick Mason's history of Pink Floyd. Quite funny and a very good insight into what was going on behind the scenes.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson

I just finished this one. I think it's been out for a while but I just heard about it. A Swedish journalist who has fallen on hard times gets hired by a wealthy family to solve a mystery. The under lying theme is about violence towards women. Some parts of it made it difficult for me to sleep at night but it was a good mystery and it's the first in a trilogy. I'm debating on whether or not to pick up the next one. It was a good read but unsettling. I think I want something a little more pleasant to think about at the moment Smile

Not my cover as my copy is 50 years old. So old it fell apart while I was reading it. Throwing it away now. It will be hard, but I think I can do it. Pretty interesting even though so outdated. More like a history since the Bolshevik revolution. Lenin, Stalin, Kruschev. Carving up the world after WWII. I'll take this, you take that, no wait, I want that, ok fine, you take it, but give me this. Dated history is sometimes fun to read. The thinking at the time, etc.
