Looking Back At Some Classics - Nick Dilley - 10-02-2013

The vocalist's suit in this video is so awesome. I miss the 60s, even though I wasn't a part of it.

Great track. Not my fav by The Who, but good nonetheless.

#379 - Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Wind Cries Mary - 1967

running recap for me - 3's=67, 2's=45, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Are You Experieced?
Written by Jimi Hendrix
Produced by Chas Chandler
Chart action: #65 US, #6 UK

the players:
Jimi Hendrix – vocals, guitar
Noel Redding – bass guitar
Mitch Mitchell – drums

Written after an argument with his girlfriend. But his girlfriend was named Kathy. Shouldn't it
have been called The Wind Cries Kathy? Riff inspired by Curtis Mayfield. Laid the track down in
20 minutes. Those were the days. Released in the states as the b-side to Purple Haze.

Lyrics

After all the jacks are in their boxes,
and the clowns have all gone to bed,
you can hear happiness staggering on down the street,
footprints dress in red.

And the wind whispers Mary.

A broom is drearily sweeping
up the broken pieces of yesterday's life.
Somewhere a Queen is weeping,
somewhere a King has no wife.

And the wind it cries Mary.

The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed,
The tiny island sags downstream
'Cos the life that they lived is dead.

And the wind screams Mary.

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past,
And with this crutch, its old age and its wisdom
It whispers, "No, this will be the last."

And The Wind Cries Mary.

This is a sweet sweet track. This is what I bob my head to, bounce around, and play air guitar to when no one is watching.
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:"***" from me also, love this track,

just noticed on wikkipedia that they reformed in 2011 for a brief tour in South America...

UK music magazine "uncut" also apparently rates the album in the top100 debut sets of alltime

Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 11-02-2013

back to Hendrix....

im not a huge fan of Hendrix by any means but i own a compilation of his material, i posted it a fair while ago and "the wind cries mary" was my favourite on there, so "***" from me, great track IMO

#378 - Bo Diddley - I'm A Man - 1955

running recap for me - 3's=67, 2's=46, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: various compilations
Written by Bo Diddley
Produced by Leonard Chess
Chart action: did not chart

the players:
Bo Diddley – vocals, guitar
Billy Boy Arnold - harmonica
Otis Spann - piano
Jerome Green - maracas
Willie Dixon - bass
Clifton James - drums

Not my favorite version but it's ok. Think I prefer the Yardbirds version. This was the b-side
to Bo's hit, Bo Diddley. Other than that I don't know anything else the man did. The single was
a #1 on the r&b chart but didn't hit the overall I guess. Said to be inspire by Muddy Waters
Hoochie Coochie Man, written by Willie Dixon who sat in on the session for this. Muddy recorded
an answer song with Mannish Boy, making reference to Bo's age at the time.

Lyrics

Now when I was a little boy,
At the age of five,
I had somethin' in my pocket,
Keep a lot of folks alive.

Now I'm a man,
Made twenty-one,
You know baby,
We can have a lot of fun.

I'm a man,
I spell M-A-N...man.

All you pretty women,
Stand in line,
I can make love to you baby,
In an hour's time.

I'm a man,
I spell M-A-N...man.

I goin' back down,
To Kansas to
Bring back the second cousin,
Little John the conqueroo.

I'm a man,
I spell M-A-N...man.

The line I shoot,
Will never miss,
The way I make love to 'em,
They can't resist.

I'm a man,
I spell M-A-N...man.

Exactly Crazy mate...I'm thinking that ther SHOULD be a lot more Beatle songs also!!!!!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:only ever thought this track to be okay and im a big Who fan so "**",

and to add comment to SteveO's post above....if this one is in the top500, there must be another 20 Who tracks above it from here on in....we wont get fooled again!

Good version but I like the versions by Muddy Waters, The Yardbirds, Chicago and the Spencer Davis Group just as well!

#377 - Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus - 1989

running recap for me - 3's=67, 2's=47, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Violator
Written by Martin Gore
Produced by Depeche Mode, Flood
Chart action: #28 US, #13 UK

the players:
Martin Gore – guitar, backing vocals
Alan Wilder – keyboards, backing vocals
Dave Gahan – lead vocals

Just ok for me, and I liked JC's version even less. Inspired by Priscilla Presley's book about
Elvis. Breakthrough song for the band here but the UK was already on board. Controversy in the
promotion when ads appeared in the UK with nothing but the song title and a phone number where
the song could be heard. Sounds pretty radical. Marilyn Manson also covered this. That's even
more radical.

Lyrics

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there

Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there

Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver

Reach out and touch faith

Your own personal Jesus

Reach out and touch faith
