my "singles" collection - CRAZY-HORSE - 08-11-2013

WHAM! "freedom" b/w "freedom(instrumental)" 1983

great white boy/blue eyed soul from Andrew Ridgely and George Michael...
"b" side is the same thing just without the vocals..ive been ripped off with another "b" side!
single peaked at #3 here...

MARY WELLS "use your head" b/w "everlovin' boy" 1964

im a big fan of Wells, this single is very average for her IMO, i mean its not bad, but its not up there with her best stuff though!
both sides are passable, well they would be...Motown didnt really make crap in the 1960s...
single failed to chart here

JULIAN LENNON "stick around" b/w "always think twice" 1986

not as good as most of his single releases IMO,in fact, probably down near the bottom but its okay...
lots of 1980s synth drums and little rock guitar riffs on the "a" side...
"b" side isnt to my liking, one of the rare Lennon tracks i dont like whatsoever!
single only managed a pathetic #79 on our charts down-under

CHIC "le freak" b/w "savoir faire" 1978

these guys were 'disco gods' for about five minutes...
i actually cringed when i pulled this one out of the box,in fact i had forgotten that i owned it...
now im not a fan of disco by any means...but surprisingly, i do like this "a" side...has a good funk feel happening!
"b" side, well, thats an instrumental, but its not a dance thing...there's a jazzy/bluesy thing happening there, i like that one also
single did here what it did everywhere else...#1

CHI-LITES "a letter to myself" b/w "sally" 1972

what's that...about ten singles from these guys already in this thread...?
i love these guys, but they never really had much chart success anywhere, would never have discovered them had The Jam not covered one of their songs
and i not decided to seek out the original version...
"a" side is likeable, but its a bit corny with the spoken word pieces throughout...
"b" side is standard Chi-Lites soul...great stuff!
as usual, this single failed to chart here

BILLY IDOL "sweet sixteen b/w "beyond belief" plus "mony mony(live)" b/w "white wedding(live)" 1986

a double disc gatefold sleeve single that included a wall poster of Idol with his peroxide hairdo and his usual sneer...guess the young girls loved it!
single i have is a limited edition set that came in purple vinyl...
i love the acoustic ballad on the "a" side,my favourite Billy song ever...
"b" side is a piece of crap...typical synth driven 1980s pop/rock stuff!
second disc is two live versions...those who werent lucky enough to get this double vinyl set had their chance about nine months later when the live disc was actually
released in its own right...that single made it to #8 on the charts here, whereas the "sweet sixteen" single peaked at #9...i guess i really got two for the price of one, or, had one stone to kill two birds...

my "singles" collection - SteveO - 10-11-2013

Two great artists! I love this song!
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:ANNIE LENNOX & AL GREEN "put a little love in your heart" b/w "a great big piece of love" 1988

Annie has one of the best female voices in pop/rock IMO, and she puts every ounce of her soul into this one...great stuff!
Al, this was my introduction to Al as a vocalist, but i was aware he had a few hits in the 1970s...
in hindsight, this is one of his best vocal prformances IMO...
love the "a" side, great stuff!, "b" side is predominatly an instrumental with a few gospel type sounds thrown in for good measure, this track is by Annie's former partner in crime Dave Stewart!
single peaked at #8 here, probably deserved the top spot, but so be it!

PAUL McCARTNEY "press" b/w "its not true" 1986

very good "a" side from his underrtaed "press to play" album from the same year...
"b" side wasnt on the original vinyl album, but was an added track on the cd version...
love both these tracks, "a" is full of the stock standard Macca melodies.."b" side is Macca having a dig at the anti-Linda brigade...
single only reached #47 here...was a top10 hit in the UK though, so all is redemmed IMO

ELVIS PRESLEY "guitar man/what'd i say" b/w "faded love" 1981

another post death release from The King...
"this is the complete version of the "a" side that wasnt originally released..original single faded out prior to Elvis ad-libbing the old Ray Charles song...
"b" side is a great version of the country song...
these tracks were remixed by Felton Jarvis to bring Elvis' vocals further out to the forefront than the original mixes...i prefer these ones over the original released versions because The King's voice sometimes sounded too distant on some of his recordings!
single was a rare chart entry for Elvis after his death but it did only peak at #73 here...

THE POLICE "every breath you take" b/w "murder by numbers" 1983

dont worry, this os one Police single i genuinely love...both sides in fact...
the whole "a" side thing is class from go to woe...including the emotive black and white video for it...
"b" side was a track not on the original "syncronicity" album but later released as a bonus track on the cd version...love that one too
single did here what it did everywhere else, it peaked at #1
