#381 - Television - Marquee Moon - 1977

running recap for me - 3's=65, 2's=45, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Marquee Moon
Written by Tom Verlaine
Produced by Andy Johns
Chart action: #30 UK

the players:
Tom Verlaine - vocal, guitar
Richard Lloyd - guitar
Fred Smith – bass
Billy Ficca – drums

Excellent track from another of those debut albums that was never equalled. Ten minute track
and still not too long. A guitar masterpiece, Richard Hell was apparently forced to leave the
band because he did not have the skill necessary to play it. Released as a single but split
into two parts on the a and b sides. Can't believe it never charted here. Stupid americans.

Lyrics

I remember
How the darkness doubled
I recall
Lightning struck itself.
I was listening
Listening to the rain
I was hearing
Hearing something else.
Life in the hive puckered up my night,
The kiss of death, the embrace of life.
There I stand neath the Marquee Moon Just waiting,
Hesitating
I ain't waiting
I spoke to a man
Down at the tracks.
I asked him
How he don't go mad.
He said 'Look here junior, don't you be so happy.
And for Heaven's sake, don't you be so sad.'
Well a Cadillac
It pulled out of the graveyard.
Pulled up to me
All they said get in.
Then the Cadillac
It puttered back into the graveyard.
And me,
I got out again.

"***" from me also, love this track,

just noticed on wikkipedia that they reformed in 2011 for a brief tour in South America...

UK music magazine "uncut" also apparently rates the album in the top100 debut sets of alltime

Seriously love some of Weezer's great tunes...this is definitely one of them. Gotta say I agree with the placement on the Rolling Stone list too, in the top 500 but shouldn't be much higher than this. Great tune tho..

#380 - Who - I Can't Explain - 1965

running recap for me - 3's=66, 2's=45, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Pete Townshend
Produced by Shel Talmy
Chart action: #93 US, #8 UK

the players:
Roger Daltrey – lead vocals
John Entwistle – bass guitar
Keith Moon – drums
Pete Townshend – lead and rhythm 12-string guitar
The Ivy League – backing vocals
Perry Ford – piano

Recorded as an answer to the Kinks You Really Got Me. Didn't know that song needed an answer.
Both Roger and Pete acknowledge the influence the Kinks had on this song, Pete saying there was
some All Day And All Of The Night in it. It says Jimmy Page played on this track but on the
personnel list he is not there, so who knows. I just keep on learnin' stuff. This was the
groups debut single. Surprised to see the chart placing in the US. It sure got airplay where I
lived.

Lyrics

Got a feeling inside (Can't explain)
It's a certain kind (Can't explain)
I feel hot and cold (Can't explain)
Yeah, down in my soul, yeah (Can't explain)

I said (Can't explain)
I'm feeling good now, yeah, but (Can't explain)

Dizzy in the head and I'm feeling blue
The things you've said, well, maybe they're true
I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again
I know what it means, but

Can't explain
I think it's love
Try to say it to you
When I feel blue

But I can't explain (Can't explain)
Yeah, hear what I'm saying, girl (Can't explain)

Dizzy in the head and I'm feeling bad
The things you've said have got me real mad
I'm gettin' funny dreams again and again
I know what it means but

Can't explain
I think it's love
Try to say it to you
When I feel blue

But I can't explain (Can't explain)
Forgive me one more time, now (Can't explain)

I said I can't explain, yeah
You drive me out of my mind
Yeah, I'm the worrying kind, babe
I said I can't explain

and to add comment to SteveO's post above....if this one is in the top500, there must be another 20 Who tracks above it from here on in....we wont get fooled again!
