Sultry songs of love & romance, mostly with very small backing groups.

A friend just turned me onto this today. Already knew Brad through his recent work with Pat Metheny. There are some incredible cover versions here on this album I would never have dreamed of hearing, let alone liking!
One in particular is a cover of Oasis' 'Wonderwall' featuring an alternate intro and extended piano improvisation. A band not known for their musical adversity or unique creativity which is so evident in this version! Not often I'll say this but it outclasses the original in every sense of the word!

This cover is of an import, but mine is basically the same. Gotta be in the mood for this, as I must be as I listen. Just takes me back to my dear dad. One clunker and four great tracks. I can just mellow out under the phones. Drimmer Art was not really much of a big band guy, and says so in the liner notes (they had them back then). He preferred the small combos. Maybe he felt lost in the larger setting. Fifteen musicians listed here, of which only three are familiar to me, Al Cohn, John Coltrane and Donald Byrd. Those liner notes also explain how some of these song titles came to be. I always find that interesting, titles for instrumentals. This is a fine set of jazz/big band music from that era. Didn't expect to find any clips from here, so I'll be happy for the one.

Looks like there were 5 volumes to this set. This is the only one I have, I think. This one comes from 8 different recording sessions between Sept 1938 and June 1939. Can't believe how clear these recordings are, and that's on vinyl. Thirty one tracks on here. Not sure if the other volumes are the same quantity. Assuming they are that's quite a bit of work, considering the man had about a 5 year career. His plane went down somewhere in Europe during WWII. Remains were never recovered. He was in the military doing tours to entertain the troups. Nice gig for wartime. Well, except for that crash part. Won't bother with a grade for each track here as I just love the whole thing. Can you have nostalgia for a time when you never existed? I do it all the time when I here big band recordings. Just imagining what it must have been like. Born after my time I guess. Developed a love for this music when I lived in Florida. There were no good current music radio stations but there was one that played this era. For all the retired folks down there I suppose. So I was about 30, cranking up the big band sounds. Probably the highlight of my Florida stay. Hated it other than that exposure. Lived there 3 years, about 2 miles from the beach and went there maybe 4 times. Left it to the wife to take the kids. A lot of these tracks do include vocals by either Tex Beneke, Ray Eberle or Marion Hutton. Tex as just ok and the other 2 were great crooners. Probably the only known track here is Moonlight Serenade and how can you not like that? Check out that 78 rpm record on track 17, now that's vintage folks. Anyway, here we go.
