JOHNNY CASH "american recordings" cd, 1994. #110 US

Johnny's final comeback(and he had many of those in his career, having more lives than a cat i believe?!)....
this is the first "american" album that was produced by Rick Rubin(there's six of these in all).
the format for these albums was for john to select songs based on their lyrical content, if he liked what he read he would seek out the original versions to get the tunes and do the songs his way(the cash way!).
probably around ninety percent of the 'american' tracks have dark, deep meanings as were the most famous songs of his career....some songs here, he has made into his own like 'delia's gone', 'the beast in me', 'oh,bury me not(on the lonesome prairie)', others like 'bird on a wire' he has done very good versions IMO...sometimes equalling the originals, sometimes outdoing them...
either way, this is a fine album, as are all his albums with Rick Rubin twiddling the knobs...
the cover also, is interesting, showing john standing proud and defiant with two dogs sitting beside him...well, the dogs were not part of the original idea...they sort of wandered in off someones property and sat beside him whilst the picture was being taken, juhn thought this idea had biblical overtones to it and insisted the shot be the cover of the album.
there's some lovely live clips attached here...well worth a look if you like JC.
ooops!, almost forgot...John recieved a Grammy for 'best contemporary folk album' for this album.

What Are You Listening To? - TraceNspace - 13-09-2012

As MusicHead mentioned it's a new album. Yay! I am enjoying it though not as much as some of their others but time will tell. I'm sure I will grow to love it as much as my favorites.

The best part is they finally recorded a favorite of mine called:

Down With the Shine (starts around 7:20 and is my favorite recording of it)

Not really my thing but I gave it a listen and while doing so noticed that Dark Side of the Moon has centre stage on the bookshelf!

Correct CH. Although I should really be posting here more as I do listen to a lot of 'world' music. (whatever that means). I like diversity in sounds and country tends to stick to standard instrumentation - nothing wrong with that, I just tend to lean towards the more experimental stuff. Maybe I need therapy! I am however a big John Denver fan. Go figure.....

John Denver is one of my favourites also...not really sure where to exactly place him though, as he doesnt seem to fit the 'country' mold most of the time, he's a great story teller...

ever since i went through Virginia and West Virginia with MH last year "country roads" sends shivers up my spine, he sums the place up beautifully in that track, watching the Shenandoah River wind through mountains and forrests is one of the most serene things i have ever seen, would have loved to have seen it in Autumn with the leaves on the trees changing colour, but alas, i didnt....maybe next time!

We have an emerging poet in our midst!

I really have to get to the States some day. Been on the to do list for years. Leaving for Croatia and Malta on Monday. Going sailing around the islands in Croatia. Can't wait.

A band 25 albums deep deserves a more thorough composition than this, but this is all I have. Formed in the 60's and
still at it, with their last release in 2009. Can't be many left from the original lineup. Never album chart
toppers, their most successful was the superb Will The Circle Be Unbroken which reached #4 in 1972. They came out
with a Volume 2 in 1989, but of course those never match the first. Many guest artists appeared on both of those but
the credit goes to the band. They were never considered pure country, but they could produce that bluegrass sound
when they wanted. Not much in the way of liner notes on this one, which is usually the problem with these budget
releases. Two mentioned guest spots, Linda Ronstad on An American Dream and Roy Acuff on I Saw The Light. Probaby
other ones not mentioned. Could swear I hear Emmylou on a couple. A lot of these are covers which was always my
hangup with the band. Very good covers for the most part. The exception being that Battle Of New Orleans which
didn't work at all. Mr. Bojangles was a moderate hit for them, but of course I couldn't get through the guys dog
upped and died and after 20 years he still grieves. Great, thanks a lot for that.
