John Renbourn was born on this day in 1944 â he died this year, in March. I consider it extremely good fortune to have stumbled over one of this manâs solo albums, So Clear, a long time ago! He was a truly brilliant guitarist and I love dipping into his catalogue â thereâs always something wonderful to discover.
He is known for his collaborations with Bert Jansch and was a member of Pentangle whilst maintaining his solo career â also associated with Stefan Grossman. His work is folk oriented with a marked leaning towards baroque and medieval styles. Something very clean and deep about his playing â he favours a steel string guitar.
Some of his albums that interest me are The Hermit, The Nine Maidens and his very last release Palermo Snow â also The Lady and the Unicorn which was inspired by the tapestries created around 1500 in France featuring a lady, a lion and a unicorn. There are six of them depicting the senses, Taste, Hearing, Sight, Smell, Touch â and one undefined but interpreted to mean "love desires only beauty of soul" â itâs called à Mon Seul Désir and Renbourn has used a picture of this one as the cover for his album. Lovely stuff -

Happy Birthday to the inimitable Joe Jackson! Heâs 61 today. I can never make up my mind about this artist. Some of his work I am thoroughly admiring of, and other stuff is simply not my thing at all. Whatever my personal opinion, he has to be commended for jumping into everything he does, boots ân all, with no holds barred (another example is his anti-non-smoking stance, or maybe itâs more of an anti-nannying stance â heâs unashamedly vocal on the subject).
