Ian Bairnson was born on this day in 1953. He hails from the Shetland Isles, Scotland. Long-time guitarist for the Alan Parsons Project (he’s on every one of the project’s albums and some of AP’s solo’s) as well as saxophonist, keyboards, some vocal work and composing, but primarily guitar, for which he deserves a huge amount of recognition. He’s contributed to albums by Kate Bush, Bucks Fizz, Bay City Rollers, Steve Harley, Chris Rainbow, and so on.

Despite being released under the Alan Parsons moniker, On Air is a Bairnson driven concept album. A lot softer than the early APP releases and a bit wafty in conceptual terms (which kinda fits in with the air thing), and I love it. The tracks follow the progress of things flight-related, from Icarus to the Apollo missions – this is a fabulous instrumental – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbezwmMEVcc

This one was written for Erik Mounsey, Bairnson’s cousin, an unarmed peace-keeping helicopter pilot who was killed in a ‘friendly fire’ accident above Iraq – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6JIr9Qy_II

… and in a surprise move, here we have Christopher Cross on vocals …

Klaus Schulze was born on this day in 1947 in Berlin, Germany. He did a brief stint with Tangerine Dream before going solo and has produced around 60 albums in the five decades of his career to date. Electronic/ambient composer and musician of the 70’s Berlin School who also records under the pseudonym Richard Wahnfried – so named for his hero, Wagner.

Most of what he does presents itself in lengthy doses, and in fact, you have to listen through the whole lot because there’s a build-up – I think that’s true of most of his stuff, not that I’ve heard a huge amount – could be wrong! This is the first of the two tracks from Moondawn (with real drums, incidentally – and you have to get past the first six minutes). Not sure I entirely get it – the time signatures could very well wreak havoc on brain waves, IMHO or maybe they do something good! Clearly, thousands enjoy the listening … the sonic equivalent of an abstract painting?? –

Caetano Veloso was born on this day in 1942, in Bahia, Brazil. Composer, singer, guitarist, writer, and political activist – he’s had a long and illustrious career notching up nine Latin Grammy Awards as well as two regular Grammy Awards.

Allmusic sums it up thus - “A true heavyweight, Caetano Veloso is a pop musician/poet/filmmaker/political activist whose stature in the pantheon of international pop musicians is on a par with that of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Lennon/McCartney. And even the most cursory listen to his recorded output over the last few decades proves that this is no exaggeration.”

This song, which was nominated for an Oscar, was composed by Elliot Goldenthal (who won that year’s Oscar for Best Original Score) and is performed by Caetano Veloso and Lila Downs. It’s from the soundtrack to the movie, Frida –
