Thanks J! REM is probably one of those bands that you are better off by buying their Hits album. I find there are a few artists like that.

Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 02-02-2013

Ha ha ha ...I remember singing this as a kid..I love this song!
Music Head Wrote:#387 - Ray Charles - Hit The Road Jack - 1961

running recap for me - 3's=61, 2's=43, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Percy Mayfield
Produced by Sid Feller
Chart action: #1 US, #6 UK

the players:
Ray Charles - piano, vocal
Darlene McCrea - backing vocal
Margie Hendricks - backing vocal
Patricia Lyles - backing vocal
Gwendolyn Berry - backing vocal
other people playing things

Could have used some more verses but still a great song. The Raelettes are up front as much as
Ray. Margie Hendricks provides that snarling vocal, plus she provided Ray a son in 1959. He
told her to hit the road in 1964. The song first shows up on a greatest hits album, which seems
strange. I have a question. Why didn't they change it to Hit The Road Ray?

Lyrics

(Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.)
(Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.)
What you say?
(Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.)
(Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more.)

Woah Woman, oh woman, don't treat me so mean,
You're the meanest old woman that I've ever seen.
I guess if you said so
I'd have to pack my things and go. (That's right)

Now baby, listen baby, don't ya treat me this-a way
Cause I'll be back on my feet some day.
(Don't care if you do 'cause it's understood)
(you ain't got no money you just ain't no good.)
Well, I guess if you say so
I'd have to pack my things and go. (That's right)

Well
(don't you come back no more.)
Uh, what you say?
(don't you come back no more.)
I didn't understand you
(don't you come back no more.)
You can't mean that
(don't you come back no more.)
Oh, now baby, please
(don't you come back no more.)
What you tryin' to do to me?
(don't you come back no more.)
Oh, don't treat me like that
(don't you come back no more.)

#386 - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Map - 2004

running recap for me - 3's=62, 2's=43, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Fever To Tell
Written by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Produced by David Andrew Sitek
Chart action: #87 US, #26 UK

the players:
Brian Chase – drums and percussion
Karen O – vocals
Nick Zinner - all other music and instrumentation

Don't know wth she's trying to say, but it sure does sound good. Vocalist Karen Orzolek wrote
the song about being on tour and missing her boyfriend. Why couldn't she just sing "I'm on tour
and I miss my boyfriend". And what's maps got to do with it? But wait, it's art and up for
interpretaion. From the bands debut album. Nominated for four MTV Awards. Must not have won
any, but hey, it's nice to be mentioned. The album was voted Best Of The Year by the NY Times.

My kind's your kind

Wait! they don't love you like i love you
Wait! they don't love you like i love you
Ma-a-a-aps, wait!

#385 - Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees - 1995

running recap for me - 3's=62, 2's=44, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: The Bends
Written by Radiohead
Produced by John Leckie
Chart action: #65 US, ?? UK

the players:
Thom Yorke – vocals, guitar, piano, string arrangements
Jonny Greenwood – guitar, organ, keyboards, piano, recorder, string arrangements
Colin Greenwood – bass guitar
Ed O'Brien – guitar, backing vocals
Phil Selway – drums, percussion
Caroline Lavelle – cello
John Matthias – violin, viola

The song is much better than the ridiculous video that goes with it. If you're gonna play it,
listen, don't watch. From their second album, it was the third single from it in the UK, but
the first in the US. Will we ever get over these different release dates? Aren't we one world
yet? This is a song about an area in east London called Canary Wharf which was landscaped with
a lot of artificial plants. Coulda fooled me. In the middle of recording this song, the band
took a break to attend a Jeff Buckley gig. Apparently it gave Yorke the inspiration he needed
to come back to the studio and nail it. Hey! I don't make this stuff up. And then Yorke breaks
down into tears. Damn, he must have really loved that Canary Wharf place.

Lyrics

Her green plastic watering can
For her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself

It wears her out, it wears her out
It wears her out, it wears her out

She lives with a broken man
A cracked polystyrene man
Who just crumbles and burns
He used to do surgery
For girls in the eighties
But gravity always wins

It wears him out, it wears him out
It wears him out, it wears him out

She looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
My fake plastic love
But I can't help the feeling
I could blow through the ceiling
If I just turn and run

It wears me out, it wears me out
It wears me out, it wears me out

If I could be who you wanted
If I could be who you wanted all the time

All the time...
All the time...
