RE: Currently Watching? - Ruby - 22-09-2018 Right Down the Line – a BBC Scotland documentary on Gerry Rafferty. It’s on YouTube in four parts. They mention in the film that while he had hits on both sides of the Atlantic and got huge amounts of airplay in the USA, he never played a single gig there – did not like the limelight one little bit, was deeply suspicious of the biz at large and disdainful of anything commercial. Not an easy character, by all accounts, all of which is forgiven for his simply genius music. It was a good watch – about an hour long in all … some apparently rare interview clips with the man himself, and it was interesting to hear Billy Connolly speaking about him, which he does with a great deal of fondness - gets quite emotional at the end ... also, Barbara Dickson who has a lovely empathetic understanding of him, as an artist, at any rate ... I think people wanted to help him with his struggles with alcohol, but he was so fiercely protective of his privacy and probably prickly with it, that I expect he just shut them down/out. Quite sad really. His liver had just had enough in the end. (Oh dear, looking back over this I must say that it's not as depressing to watch as I have made it sound in last few sentences!) RE: Currently Watching? - CRAZY-HORSE - 22-09-2018 Billy and Gerry were great friends, grew up together and formed a folk group together called The Humblebums back in the 1960s.. Billy, on stage has on occasion told funny stories of the two of them together back in the day... I don't own anything by them but heres a favourite of mine by Humblebums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pNbllZpj5c RE: Currently Watching? - Jerome - 25-09-2018 A great documentary. I saw this some time back. My favourite track of his - https://youtu.be/NSfOB8ANdWU RE: Currently Watching? - Ruby - 26-09-2018 ^I actually watched it twice, lol! Great song. ^^CH - it touches on the early stuff - the Humblebums and Stealers Wheel as well. I liked Billy Connolly's generosity of spirit in conceding that Gerry Rafferty was the musician in all of it while he was, well ... not!
RE: Currently Watching? - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-09-2018 thanks Ruby... i'll try to find it and watch it RE: Currently Watching? - CRAZY-HORSE - 31-10-2018 KISS on Tonight Show as a build up for their "end of the road" tour which starts in January 2019: Jeez...these guys are just corny now, Paul cant really hold a tune, all Gene can do is stand there and poke out his tongue, Tommy looks like he's playing air guitar in his bedroom...its really sad to watch! RE: Currently Watching? - SteveO - 09-11-2018 My My My !!!! RE: Currently Watching? - CRAZY-HORSE - 05-01-2019 a rockumentary.... Freddie Mercury: the great pretender" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury:_The_Great_Pretender covers the 1980s leading up to his death... spent a good fifteen minutes examining the "Barcelona" album with Monserrat Caballe which was fascinating... could have done without the camp/gayness of his 39th birthday party which pretty much mirrored the FGTH video "relax"...Yuck!!!!!! RE: Currently Watching? - SteveO - 29-01-2019 Finally watched Bohemian Rhapsody and it is BRILLIANT ! I was inspired to watch the Live Aid concert again ! No idea Freddie was married ! I got a little teary eyed at the end. One criticism, Rami Malek appeared not looking like Freddie because of his teeth and he hardly opened his mouth during the entire movie! As disclosed in the movie Freddie was born with two extra incisors giving him the ability to sing in five octaves ! His overbite was grossly exaggerated in the movie and it was difficult to look at sometimes. Malek almost looked hideous at times ! More of a Halloween costume than real life ! RE: Currently Watching? - CRAZY-HORSE - 31-01-2019 ^^ Freddie never married SteveO, but he did get engaged to long time friend Mary Austin whom he wrote many songs about including "love of my life"... back to my post at hand... went to the cinema today to watch the new Clint Eastwood movie The Mule, its based on the true story of a 90 year old man, who becomes a mule for a drug cartel and his subsequent capture by the DEA... a very good movie that also stars Bradley Cooper as the head DEA agent after him.. |
