NIK KERSHAW "the riddle" b/w "progress" 1984

synth-pop new-wave guy from the UK, made his name as part of the Kajagoogoo duo...
i dont mind this "a" side, it still sounds ok to me..
"b" side, i cant recall ever hearing it, but that doesnt matter because i dont feel like i missed something special anyway
single reached #6 here

JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS "i love rock and roll" b/w "love is pain" 1982

ive got to admit that im embarrassed that i never bought a JJ album...!
the 'crimson and clover' single is superb(both sides), and this is no exception, but the "b" side just misses the love mark, but not by much...
this "a" side embodies everything that is great about rock and roll...thumping drums, great simplistic riffs, simple lyrics and vocals with attitude!
the single was a best seller everywhere reaching #1 here also!

THE KINKS "flashbacks-ep" 1981

a reissue release back in the day...
contains two of their best songs IMO, and two that werent big hits for The Kinks...
track #1, "waterloo sunset" ***,pretty hard to knock this classic in any way..this is The Kinks signature tune IMO
track #2, "david watts" ** ,another good track from the 1960s, ressurected by The Jam in 1978
track #3, "a well respected man" ***,another of my favourites by these guys,up there with track #1 IMO
track #4, "stop your sobbin'"** , one of their early singles that didnt set the world on fire, but again, was released by The Pretenders around 1978ish...
this "Ep" didnt chart here...

im not posting the links for this one, we should all know the tracks by now

THE JAM "funeral pyre" b/w "disguises" 1981

Paul Weller once said "1981 was a horrible year for singles", not sure if he maent his own singles or for music in general...
The Jam only released two singles in that year and no album..and the singles, this one and "absolute beginners" are really not up to par as Jam singles IMO!
i like the lyrics with this one but im not keen on the music overall, the rolling drum sound that continues throughout must have made drummer Rick Buckler's arms ache, its just non-stop!
"b" side is okay also, its a cover of an old Who track from around 1966...
single actually charted here which i wasnt aware of, but it did top out at #72

BILLY JOEL "the times they are a changing(live)" b/w "innocent man(live)" 1987

a live single taken from his live album recorded in the USSR.
his take on the Dylan classic isnt too bad, but of course, no-one does Dylan properly except Dylan himself and maybe The Byrds/Manfred Mann
also, its weird seeing Billy with guitar in hand instead of sitting at a piano...
"b" side is from the same show. its pretty good, but not as good as his original studio version
single didnt chart here, but from memory both sides got a lot of airplay

ELVIS PRESLEY "you dont have to say you love me" b/w "patch it up" 1970

a cover love song for the "a" side here, its ok, not one of my favourite Presley recordings though...
"b" side sounds more like an impromptu jam than a real song, but it does rock...
single reached #7 here

WHAM! "im your man(extended stimulation)" b/w "do it right(instrumental)" & "im your man(acapella)"

12" single of my favourite Wham! single...
"a" side is an extended version of the 7" single...i love this version!
"b" side is an instrumental version of "im your man", and also theres an 'acapella' version of the song also, not real acapella because there is minimal instrumentation on it but...love that one also...!
single made it to #3 here

ELVIS PRESLEY "burning love" b/w "its a matter of time" 1972.

one of Elvis' best rockers of the 1970s...i like it,but dont love it...
"b" side is an old classic re-done Presley ballad style, i love this version better than any other version of this song i have ever heard!
single peaked at #3 here...

BUGGLES "video killed the radio star" b/w "kid dynamo" 1979

"a" side is a totally annoying piece of work, but unfortunately it is still likeable after all these years!, and how true is the title?...i mean, artists now make ambitious videos to support lame songs, and when you listen to the tracks without the video they are usually crapp!
"b" side is also annoyingly good...ggrrrrr!
single made it to #1 here, as it did everywhere else!

NME "various artists 'live'-ep" 1985

another freebie that came with the music industry's finest music magazine back in the day...
these tracks on here were recorded especially for the NME and are unavailable elsewhere(even though there are live versions out there, theyre not the same as these!)
obviously, being a freebie, this couldnt chart anywhere...
