Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-01-2013

"***" from me also, this one has a sort of pre-grunge grunge sound to me, im sure it would have been quite 'original' sounding back in the day

I have a personal connection to Whipping Post! I saw the Allmans just before Duane died. They were playing in Montreal and they pretty much mirrored the Live at Fillmore East concert!..I had been playing the album a zillion times before so I pretty much knew what songs and what dialogue followed! After one of the songs I shouted out "Whipping Post" and the band immediately broke into the intro!...I'll never forget that moment...quite a thrill for a 17 year old kid...lol...so I love this song in more ways than one!
Music Head Wrote:#393 - Allman Brothers - Whipping Post - 1969

running recap for me - 3's=57, 2's=41, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: The Allman Brothers Band
Written by Greg Allman
Produced by Tom Dowd
Chart action: non single

the players:
Duane Allman: slide guitar and lead guitar
Gregg Allman: vocals, organ
Dickey Betts: lead guitar
Berry Oakley: bass guitar, backing vocals
Butch Trucks: drums

Rolling Stone is giving the selection to the live version on At Fillmore East, which runs for
23 minutes, which is why I don't care for live albums from jam bands. Couldn't handle it for 23
minutes, but I do love the 5 minute album version of the song. From their debut album which was
not that big a seller at the time. Greg was on the verge of quitting music when brother Duane
talked him out of it. Always wonder if Duane wouldn't have been bigger than Greg. After all,
anyone that would marry Cher.........?

Lyrics

I've been run down
I've been lied to
I don't know why,
I let that mean woman make me a fool
She took all my money
Wrecks my new car
Now she's with one of my good time buddies
They're drinkin' in some cross town bar

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I've been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I'm dyin'

My friends tell me
That I've been such a fool
And I have to stand down and take it babe,
All for lovin' you
I drown myself in sorrow
As I look at what you've done
Nothin' seems to change
Bad times stay the same
And I can't run

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I've been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I'm dyin'

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I've been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I'm dyin'

good story SteveO...i love it when songs bring back memories of something from my youth also, gives it a special meaning of sorts

one is: when Police "wrapped around your finger" was released as a single i had just started my apprecticeship, that song always sticks in my mind because of the opening line "you consider me a young apprentice...", just little things like that and Style Council's "long hot summer" was a hit during one of our hottest summers here, the synth work always reminded me of a cool summers breeze on a hot day etc etc...
i guess the most vivid memory was buying Lennon's "(just like) starting over" single...the day before he died, i felt like he was starting over and i was starting to get into his solo music, sad stuff...also, on another morbid note...had just saved up enough money to by Elvis' "moody blue" album, got it after school, next morning he was dead also, just things like that stick in my mind when i hear/play tracks like that...

#392 - Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony - 1997

running recap for me - 3's=57, 2's=42, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Urban Hymns
Written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Richard Ashcroft
Produced by Verve
Chart action: #12 US, #2 UK, #11 Australia, #5 Canada

the players:
Richard Ashcroft – vocals, guitar
Nick McCabe – lead guitar
Simon Jones – bass guitar
Peter Salisbury – drums
Simon Tong – guitar, keyboards
plus the brilliant string players

I've gone back and forth on this one. The strings make it of course. The live clip to emphasize
that. Since it used a sample from an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time,"
this song gave equal credit to Jagger-Richards. From The Verve's third album. Nominated for a
Brit Award, MTV Award and a Grammy, but losing all three. The Grammy went to the Wallflowers
and not sure about the others. I could look that up for you, but if you really cared you would
look it up for yourself.

Lyrics

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

I can't change my mold
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Have you ever been down?
Have you've ever been down?

#391 - Aaron Neville - Tell It Like It Is - 1966

running recap for me - 3's=58, 2's=42, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Tell It Like It Is
Written by George Davis, Lee Diamond
Produced by George Davis
Chart action: #2 US

the players:
Aaron Neville - vocal

Absolutely love it. Don't think the guy ever scored anything near as big. And yet he's a
legend. Shows what one hit can do. Cut while Aaron still had his day job as a longshoreman. I
prefer shortshorewomen. Amazing the career Aaron has built both as a solo act and part of the
Neville Brothers. I just wish he'd get rid of that thing over his eye. When I see him perform
that's all I see.

Lyrics

If you want something to play with
Go and find yourself a toy
Baby my time is too expensive
And I'm not a little boy

If you are serious
Don't play with my heart
It makes me furious
But if you want me to love you
Then a baby I will, girl you know that I will

Tell it like it is
Don't be ashamed to let your conscience be your guide
But I know deep down inside me
I believe you love me, forget your foolish pride

Life is too short to have sorrow
You may be here today and gone tomorrow
You might as well get what you want
So go on and live, baby go on and live

Tell it like it is
I'm nothing to play with
Go and find yourself a toy
But I... Tell it like it is
My time is too expensive and I'm not your little boy

Aaron has such a beautiful and distinctive voice....I love this song!
