What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 03-11-2010 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Now this is top of the line Dino folks. This covers the best of the early Reprise years, which is mid-career. Some of his biggest hits are on this one, with his voice at it's finest. The booze and cigarettes were kickin' in. Only dud is that Birds And The Bees cover. Shoulda stayed away from that Dean. With 6 songs I love, the favorite was hard. Ended up with the not so well known I Can't Help Remembering You. May have been covered by others, but this is the version that sticks with me. Love the tv show clips where he's smoking on stage. Unbelievable, 2 days in a row with no clip for my favorite. Damn you youtube. Wasn't that covered by Elvis also? All them chapel songs blend together. What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-11-2010 i think the Bachelors covered it, and Johnny Burnette also, sure my dads got a version by Faron Young on an album also( speaking of FY, got his best of cd in the mail today, looking foreward to playing it over the next day or so) What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 17-11-2010 from my library (vinyl) ![]() The first one where Barry really lost me. I like mellow/jazzy but this just didn't do it. I imagine he was at the point in his career where the label (Arista) said do anything you want to do. Just wondering if they had second thoughts. Nice music throughout this, and Barrys voice is fine. So it's hard for me to peg why I don't like it. Guest spots from Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme were welcome but didn't add much. No seperation between tracks with an unnoticable transition from one song to the next. So it sort of all runs together. By the end I let out a sigh of relief. The album made it to #28 on the billboard charts. Singles of Paradise Cafe and When October Goes, neither of which touched the pop charts. I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM Worst Track - Night Song Best Track - Paradise Cafe The night is new The faces are friendly So have a few and let me play Some new songs, some blue songs The mood is always right every night at the Paradise Cafe The world outside may make its own madness But here we hide the world away No headlines, no deadlines we'll make them disappear while you're here at the Paradise Cafe The room is kinda smokey The phone ain't workin' The same old broken keys don't play But no one seems to mind it 'cause someone's buyin' And we'll all get through one more day Just me and you around the piano Not much to do but dream away So stay on, I'll play on I'm all yours for a song all night long at the Paradise Cafe Forget the one who loved you then lied and left you Forget the love you almost had But if you must remember the way it left you We'll make it feel good to feel bad Just me and you around the piano Not much to do but dream away So stay on, I'll play on I'm all yours for a song all night long at the Paradise Cafe 1) Paradise Cafe - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGLbZV_7IXs 2) Where Have You Gone - ** audio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L_7cbTkHfY 3) Say No More - * 4) Blue - * live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBpbrrUGsXM 5) When October Goes - ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIwp6xZdoRc 6) What Am I Doin' Here - * 7) Goodbye My Love - ** 8) Big City Blues - ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daFe0ZHEHw0 9) When Love Is Gone - * 10) I've Never Been So Low On Love - ** live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nepnI5m-RFU 11) Night Song - * 3's - 0 2's - 6 1's - 5 Grade 1.5 What Are You Listening To? - JazzyRandy - 20-11-2010 I listened to two jazz albums today: Tom Harrell Roman Nights 2010 Scott Colley Architect Of The Silent Moment 2007 I got the Harrell earlier this year and it's grown on me tremendously since my first few listens. At first I thought it was competent, but it didn't thrill me much. Now, it's one of my top 5 albums of the year. Two songs are excellent: "Let The Children Play" and "Agua". Another four are very very good. Only two leave me lukewarm, but none are bad. I got the Colley about a month ago. I've only heard it a few times, but so far it's not a big favorite. Two songs stand out, the title song and "Masoosong". Another two or three have the potential to stand out. Only two really turn me off. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 21-11-2010 Hmmmm. Looks like your Jazz tastes are going to be a little more esoteric than mine. I'm still exploring the old stuff, and haven't ventured much into recent Jazz. What Are You Listening To? - JazzyRandy - 21-11-2010 Tiggi, My Jazz journey hasn't been a linear path. I started out with Earl Klugh, then a little contemporary smooth jazz, then a lot of a few contemporary (not to be confused with smooth jazz) jazz artists like Joshua Redman and James Carter. I then took a serious sidetrack into classic Jazz, mostly the 60s but I also dabbled in the 50s and 70s. Eventually, I filled out my 80s-90s experience and am trying to round out my 2000s. All this has gone on for about the last dozen (no, make that more like 20) years or so -- I started a few years earlier officially, but 12-13 years ago was about the time I got serious in my exploration. It's been a wild & fun (and expensive) ride, and I've loved every minute of it! -Randy |
