Born on this day ... - Ruby - 11-07-2015 Andrew Bird was born on this day in 1973. He is a classically trained violinist and an eclectic singer/songwriter who defies pigeonholing. For example, heâs interested in, and influenced by, traditional folk music of varying origins, pre-war jazz and swing, and calypso, all of which has resulted in some interesting sounds! Bird does things very differently â he seems to have an installation/exhibition of his latest work, Echolocations: Canyon, using a medium they refer to as a Sonic Arboretum. (Echolocations appears to be available only as a download, which is a shame). Heâs in pursuit of any unbroken frontiers related to his craft, it would seem! A taster â¦. the blurb on the clip explains the idea ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoXk1wGgAWc And from 2007âs Armchair Apocrypha â Born on this day ... - Ruby - 12-07-2015 John Wetton was born on this day in the UK in 1949. Lead vocalist and bass guitarist for Asia, he has an impressive résumé; a busy boy, this one! Heâs been with Family, King Crimson, Yes, Roxy Music, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep, and in addition to all that and his solo career, and his tenure with Asia, heâs worked as a session musician and in collaborations with a whole host of others. Itâs counter-intuitive, since itâs what heâs best known for, but personally, I never really got into Asia and prefer his singing when heâs not belting it out, as in this one from his most recent solo album â Raised in Captivity (on which Steve Morse, Steve Hackett, Geoff Downes, Tony Kaye, Eddie Jobson, Mick Box, Alex Machacek, Billy Sherwood and Robert Fripp are all credited!!!) ⦠ Born on this day ... - Music Head - 12-07-2015 Christine McVie - born on this day in 1943 in England that would make her 72 the other female in the band Born on this day ... - Music Head - 13-07-2015 Roger McGuinn - born on this day in 1942 in Chicago that would make him 73 Byrds lead man plus a solo career love this from his Cardiff Rose album Born on this day ... - Music Head - 15-07-2015 Linda Ronstadt - born on this day in 1946 in Arizona that would make her 69 probably my fav of hers Born on this day ... - Jerome - 15-07-2015 I was watching a documentary on the Eagles last night and I never realised that Glenn Frey and Don Henley were part of her backing band. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 15-07-2015 Happy Birthday to Satch .. Joe Satriani, that is! Born in 1956 in New York. In case anyone didnât know, heâs an instrumental rock guitarist and player of other instruments â also a teacher of guitar, âsongâwriter, composer and producer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Satriani Known for his virtuosity â Surfing with the Alien is synonymous with Satriani in my âfilingâ system. Highly technical proficient he may be, but itâs almost like heâs a machine. That being said - all credit to him â he is a master of technique and itâs all a matter of personal taste. The very recognisable title track from SWTA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYThqD2pQbI ⦠and three tracks into the album, this one offers some relief from guns a-blazinâ! ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 16-07-2015 Stewart Copeland was born on this day in 1952. He was the drummer for The Police and is more recently a respected writer of soundtracks. He was also with Curved Air prior to The Police, which I hadnât known, formed Animal Logic with the Stanley Clarke and Deborah Holland, releasing two albums before disbanding, and has had a respectable solo career, to date. His father was a CIA man, and as a result of traveling in that capacity, Copeland was initially raised in Egypt and then Lebanon which is where he started drumming. Latterly, heâs been in demand and very busy in the musical score department and has also composed for ballet and opera. Who knew?! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_Copeland I like this â from wiki âCopeland is also noted for his strong emphasis on the groove as a complement to the song, rather than as its core component. He once drove this point home at a drum clinic: Copeland announced that he would show the audience something "that very few modern drummers can do," and proceeded to play a simple rock beat for two minutes. Nonetheless, his playing often incorporates spectacular fills and subtle inflections which greatly augment the groove.â Out of curiosity Iâve been listening to his Orchestralli, a live recording of âchamber ensembleâ music which he composed during a visit/tour to Italy in 2004. Itâs a lot soundtrack-like in places, but thereâs something quite appealing about the whole thing. Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 17-07-2015 in 1941.....SPENCER DAVIS founder of the shortlived but influential UK group Spencer Davis Group who were fronted by a 16yo vocalist called Stevie Winwood when they released their debut single.... the clip below wasnt one of their biggest hits worldwide bu it is one of my favourites of theirs.... Born on this day ... - Ruby - 17-07-2015 ^Wow! That's a very young Stevie. His voice doesn't seem to have changed that dramatically either! Still never know whether I love it or not. Nicolette Larson was born on this day in 1952. Her voice almost seems to have been tailored as the perfect harmonic compliment to that of Neil Young with whom she performed and recorded extensively - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsWrmJjD2eY. She died at the age of 45 as a result of complications arising from liver failure. Her highest charting solo was her cover of Youngâs âLotta Loveâ â |
