RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-04-2019

LORDE "pure heroine"  cd, 2013:

New Zealander's debut album...
released several months after the "ep" posted above...
written and recorded when she was just fifteen, released when
she was sixteen...
sparse music, fragile forlorn vocals for the most part...
totally, unique at the time, nothing had sounded like this previously,
even Mr Bowie proclaimed her to be "the future of music", very big
compliment indeed...
not as good as the "ep" but I love it

from the album, the worldwide smash hit...

LORDE "melodrama"  cd,  2017

Lorde's second and most recent album...
musically and lyrically a much better album than the debut...
more pop orientated than the Pure Heroine, possibly because she was
learning, being influenced by her new BFF Taylor Swift....
either way, I love this one more than the debut but the rest of the world doesn't appear
to agree with this one barely scraping the million sales mark worldwide...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

BIC RUNGA "drive" 1998, cd. #45 AU.

Bic was 19 when she released this, her debut album back in 1998, after being discovered by Neil Finn, who incidently plays some guitar on this album.
Bic is part chinese and part Maori(indigineous new zealander).
its so hard to describe this album other than the music is acoustic and sparse which leaves room for Ms.Runga to showcase her amazing vocals, the lyrics and tone of the vocals are a bit edgy and frail yet confident and forceful at the same time.
"sway" was a big hit here in Australia and also in NZ but failed to chart anywhere else, even though it was used in the soundtrack of the movie "american pie". this album does sound atmospheric and tranquil when listened to with headphones on, a glass of good red wine and the lights dimmed way down.
if anyone can describe this music better than me, feel free to do so as i am lost for a description!

revisiting this one but cant be bothered starting over so basically doing a cheap "copy and paste" job LOL!
cant believe its over 20 yrs old now!, Holy Crap time flies by!
still a very good album,
track #2, "sway" is still my favourite, it has a distinct Neil Finn solo feel to it...

THE RAMONES "hey ho-lets go: greatest hits" cd, 2006:

im a late comer to these guys...
album covers 76-84 with twenty tracks...
early stuff sounds just like The Clash, the latter songs more AOR...
good solid album...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM:

favourite is their debut single:

IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS "new boots and panties" cd, 1977:

Philanthropist Dury's debut set....
lots of 'cockney rhyming slang', lots of course rough vocals,
lots of UK Ska, pseudo punk and pre-new wave music...
album for the most part portrays harrowing, bleak messages of life
in the urban decay of London (Essex to be exact) with Dury not holding back
with the punches...
no hit singles off this album but it remains his biggest seller to date...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

for a change i'll post the love song this time round:

DUKE SPECIAL "songs from the deep forest" cd, 2006

Irish artist...

alt-pop I guess...
sounds like Ben Folds for the most part and im not really a fan of him overall...
not too bad though...

MODEST MOUSE "we were dead  before the ship even sank" cd, 2007

indi-rock band...
I own two...
turned on to these guys back in 2011 whilst sitting under an oak tree sipping soda
and sharing a doobie  with my brother....
album was supposed to be a concept album with songs about ship wrecks but it never ended
up happening  and they kept the title anyway...
good solid album, much  better than the other album I own...
Johnny Marr was a member of the band for this release...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

LEADER CHEETAH "the sunspot letters" cd, 2009:

Aussie alt-rock band...
debut album of two, I wasn't even aware they released another one...
reached #64 here in Australia, the second album failed to chart...
sounds a lot like Neil and Crazy Horse which is what probably subliminally
attracted me to it...
superb album IMO, love just about everything on it

THE LUMINEERS "Cleopatra" cd, 2016:

Alt folky dudes...
second album, third one on the way later this year...
own both so far...
continues on the folky/Americana sounds of their debut...
a good solid album, still prefer their debut set though...

THE LIVING END "the ending is just the beginning repeating" cd, 2011:

Aussie alt-rock band...
sixth album of eight, only one I own...
some almost Green Day sounding tunes on here, others just alt rock with hints of
rockabilly and psychedelia...
I always liked the band but this is the only one I got round to purchasing for some reason??
