This is probably not a very good representation of the groups output, with only 10 tracks, but it covers the hits I wanted, so it works for me. Peak period for the group was the early 70's when they had a string of hits. Their first hit was actually in 1961, Every Beat Of My Heart, included here. Gladys would have been 17 then. The song went #1 r&b and #6 pop. Not a bad start. A follow up hit resulted in a move to the big leagues with Motown in 1966. Gladys actually suggested to Motown founder Berry Gordy that he check out a group called The Jackson 5. I had forgotten the group had a hit with I Heard It Through The Grapevine, which was released as a single a year before the better known Marvin Gaye version. Gayes was actually recorded earlier but not released. Gladys took it to #1 before Marvin did. Can't mention that without a shoutout to CCR's brilliant version. Biggest Motown hit was Either One Of Us in 1972 which got the group a Grammy. Time for another move, to Buddha Records where the group had their biggest hit with Midnight Train To Georgia, netting yet another Grammy. I always like to sing the Pips part to that one. They were inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 1996.
