Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 19-01-2013 great track from the Motown songbook IMO Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 20-01-2013 #398 - Police - Roxanne - 1979 running recap for me - 3's=53, 2's=40, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Outlandos d'Amour Written by Sting Produced by Police Chart action: #32 US, #12 UK the players: Sting - bass, lead vocals, backing vocals Andy Summers - guitar, backing vocals Stewart Copeland - drums, backing vocals About falling in love with a prostitute. The name was taken from a poster in the hotel lobby when the band was on tour in Paris. The band wasn't enthusiastic about the song but manager Miles Copeland (brother of Stewart) persuaded label A&M to release it as a single even before an album was completed. It flopped on that release and it was not until the album was released months later that the song was re-released and found it's audience. Lyrics You don't have to put on the red light Those days are over You don't have to sell your body to the night Roxanne You don't have to wear that dress tonight Walk the streets of money You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne I loved you since I knew you I wouldn't talk down to you I have you to tell just how I feel I won't share you with another boy I know my mind is made up So put away your make up Told you once I won't tell you again It's a bad way Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Roxanne (Put on the red light) Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 20-01-2013 absolutely love The Police and this song is brilliant also... cant say the same for Sting as a solo artist though...went off him after his second solo album, hbe's now just a boring pretentious old fart, hmm, who else reminds me of that, oh yeh Bono! Looking Back At Some Classics - PennyLane - 21-01-2013 I adore this song. Every time I hear it I can't help but sing out loud and I get really excited. When I found and bought Outlandos d'Amour on Vinyl, it was a spectacular day for me. Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 21-01-2013 #397 - Elton John - Tiny Dancer - 1971 running recap for me - 3's=54, 2's=40, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Madman Across The Water Written by Elton John, Bernie Taupin Produced by Gus Dudgeon Chart action: #41 US, #13 Australia, #19 Canada the players: Elton John - piano, vocal Roger Pope: drums David Glover: bass guitar Caleb Quaye: electric guitar BJ Cole: steel guitar Davey Johnstone: acoustic guitar Amazing how beautiful the simplicity of just piano and vocal can be in the clip. Spiced up for the released version but really, you don't need anything more. From Elton's fourth album. Taupin wrote the lyrics about his first wife who really was a seamstress for the band. Conflicting stories about that. Edited down for the single which loses nothing lyrically. The song was not released as a single in the UK. Lyrics Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand Jesus freaks out in the street Handing tickets out for God Turning back she just laughs The boulevard is not that bad Piano man he makes his stand In the auditorium Looking on she sings the songs The words she knows the tune she hums But oh how it feels so real Lying here with no one near Only you and you can hear me When I say softly slowly Hold me closer tiny dancer Count the headlights on the highway Lay me down in sheets of linen you had a busy day today Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 21-01-2013 Roxanne is a great song!!!!! mile:Music Head Wrote:#398 - Police - Roxanne - 1979 Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 21-01-2013 I love this one!...Very pretty with a great melody! Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 22-01-2013 #396 - Eric B. And Rakim - I Know You Got Soul - 1987 running recap for me - 3's=54, 2's=41, 1's=10 this one - ** from the album: Paid In Full Written by Eric B. And Rakim Produced by Eric B. And Rakim Chart action: did not chart the players: Rakim - vocal Eric B. - whatever DJ's do An absolute gem up against that rap/hip-hop one I just posted in the Currently Watching thread. Actually just an ok. Rap before they took it to the next level. No porn or nigga in the lyrics. Rakim was the rapper and Eric B. is called the DJ. Does that make him a musician? Hell, I don't know. Third single from their debut album. Hit the dance chart but not the mainstream. Samples from a 1971 song of the same name by Bobby Byrd. Also some James Brown samples. This song was then sampled by various other artists. It's all fair game. Lyrics It's been a long time, I shouldn't have left you Without a strong rhyme to step to Think of how many weak shows you slept through Time's up, I'm sorry I kept you Thinking of this, you keep repeating you miss The rhymes from the microphone soloist And you sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon As you hear it, pump up the volume Dance wit the speaker 'till you hear it blow, Then plug in the headphone 'cause here it go It's a 4 letter word when it's heard, it control your body to dance (You got it) soul, Ditects the tempo like a red alert Reaches your reflex, so let it work When this is playing, you can't get stuck wit The steps, so get set and I'm a still come up wit A gift to be swift, follow the leader, the rhyme will go Def wit the record that was mixed a long time ago It can be done but only I can do it For those that can dance and clap your hands to it I start to think and then I sink Into the paper like I was ink When I'm writing, I'm trapped in between the lines, I escape when I finish the rhyme... I got soul You got it [x4] I know you got soul Picture a mic, the stage is empty A beat like this might tempt me To pose, show my rings and my fat gold chain Grab the mic like I'm on Soul Train But I'll wait 'cause I mastered this Let the others go first so the brothers don't miss Eric B. break the sticks (you got it) Rakim will begin when you make the mix I'll experiment like a scientist You wanna rhyme, you gotta sign my list 'Cause I'm a manifest and bless the mic I hold You want it next? then you gotta have soul 'Cause if you ain't got it, I'm a make an encore Take the mic, make the people respond for The R, 'cause that's the way it'll have to be If you wanna get on after me Think about it, wait, erase your rhyme Forget it and don't waste your time 'Cause I'll be in the crowd if you ain't controlling it Drop the mic, you shouldn't be holding it This is how it should be done This style is identical to none Some try to make it sound like this but you're getting me So upset that I'm wet 'cause you're sweating me I drip steam like a microphone fiend Eager to MC is my theme I get hype when I hear a drum roll Rakim is on the mic and you know I got soul You got it [x5] I got soul (you got it) that's why I came To teach those who can't say my name First of all, I'm the soloist, the soul controller Rakim gets stronger as I get older Constant elevation causes expansion I write my rhyme while I cool in my mansion Then put it on tape and in the city I test it Then on the radio the R's requested You listen to it, the concept might break you 'Cause almost anyone can relate to... Whoever's out of hand, I'm give him handles Light 'em up, blow 'em out like candles Or should I just let him melt? Then give him a hand so they can see how it felt I'm not bold just cuz I rock gold Rakim is on the mic and you know I got soul You got it [x4] Now I'm a stop to see what you got Get off the mic before I get too hot I want to see which posse can dance the best It should be easy 'cause the beat is fresh Now if your from Uptown, Brooklyn- bound, The Bronx, Queens, or Long Island Sound, Even other states come right and exact, It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at Since you came here, you have to show and prove And do that dance until it don't move 'Cause all you need is soul self-esteem will release, The rest is up to you, Rakim 'll say peace You got it [x10] |
