What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 03-09-2010 Outstanding jazz guitarist whom I discovered today. This particular album features the late Chet Akins with his trademark sound. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-09-2010 I have a couple of his albums, including one of duets with Stephane Grapelli. I believe he's rated as one of the most technically gifted guitarists in the world. He's recorded with Linn Records (manufacturers of ludicrously expensive hi-fi gear), and the album I have of his that's released by them sounds amazing. What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 04-09-2010 Cool, I am familiar with Stephane Grappeli. Believe he played with Django Rheinhardt back in the day. Theres also a fantastic live video of him playing with a young Martin Taylor circa 1980; Despite that, Im currently revisiting a great jazz album I havent heard for a while; Blue Mitchell's Graffiti Blues. Whilst I was at it, I decided to download a few others since it's the only album I own of his. One of them is an even later one from around '77 called 'Mapenzi' which is also very good. I remember watching a PBS special back in the day. Must have had an impact. The group wouldn't quit on trying to revive the 40's doo-wop era. I think we all knew that wouldn't translate to record sales, but I'm sure they were an awesome live act. Formed in 1969 jazz remakes were their forte. Not sure if they ever did any original material. Surely they had to have given it a shot at some point. This is their 8th studio album and there is only one standout for me, Baby Come Back To Me, and I can't recall the original artist, sorry. A brilliant demonstration of that doo-wop sound. There are some live trakcs on the album from a concert in Japan. There are some real duds here though with a fast Unchained Melody topping that list. Album gets a barely passing grade for me. Only made it to #127 on the U.S. overall chart but #11 on the jazz charts. A single of my favorite, screeched to a halt at #83 with Route 66 at #78. Bad audio clip included for Baby Come Back To Me, only because it is an excellent choreographed line dance routine to the song. Ed doesnt like 'plenty of nothin', i dont know the original/previous versions, but it sounded pretty good to me the other 5 tracks i listened to werent worth my time i think the main problem with the album is brian wilsons vocals, they just dont suit the emotion in the songs themselves, which makes me wondeer now that i probably like 'plenty of nothin' best of all the tracks because his boring vocals arent on it??? working on Eds rating system i give it a rating of 1.7 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 12-09-2010 cool thanks for listening CRAZY What Are You Listening To? - Thraak - 13-09-2010 Clip from the concert on Sat, can't stop listening to this! Whats even better is I can 'relive' the concert anytime I want at the click of a button! I still regard the 'From The Cradle' album as one of Clapton's finest hours. There is also a 10 DVD set of the show available. The show was an excellent piece of work if I remember correctly. For those looking to discover jazz, I would highly recommend either the cd's or the dvds to begin your journey. Dave Brubeck was a major player on the college circuit in the mid 50's, and this is a nice summary of his career. Dave is still alive at 90, although he doesn't do much kicking anymore. Saw him on Jools Hollands show not too long ago. He performed for about 30 seconds before he got winded playing the piano. Gotta give him credit for showing up though. Most of the best stuff on here is with Paul Desmond on sax who also wrote the biggest hit for Dave, Take Five, which was a #25 hit in 1959. This album went to #10 spot on the jazz charts. Considering that's 40 years after the guys peak, I'd say that's some pretty good respect.
