Jean de Florette, and Manon des Sources, directed by Claude Berri - 1986. Two separate films – it’s imperative to watch them both.

I’d read the books but not seen the movies, which were made some time back. Set at the turn of the century (not the millennium – the one before) in Provence and dealing with the machinations and conspiracies inherent in rural peasant life and small communities. Yves Montand, Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil play the main characters in the first movie; a tale of greed and spite, the indomitable human spirit and therefore, the nature of all things!

Montand is a wealthy landowner who has a somewhat obsequious and not very bright nephew (Auteuil) – his only remaining relative. They live on a farm below a neighbours' on which there is a hidden spring that they covet. Water is scarce in this region and the nephew has come home from military service with the idea of growing carnations on his rather arid piece of land in order to make money. It’s a convoluted story and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who might want to watch – suffice to say that a very young and absolutely convincing Depardieu plays the ever optimistic heir of the land on which the spring lies, despite the fact that he was born a hunchback, and he does everything within his power, faced by criminal odds, to make his own farming plans work. He believes in the human good – foolishly, in this instance – and he believes in statistics! All three of the leads are absolutely fantastic in their roles, as are some of the minor characters. OMG – the quality of acting is superb, the scheming Yves Montand deserved ever accolade he ever received, as does Daniel Auteuil.

As to the actual filming, I feel that I know that terrain and that village intimately – it’s absolutely gorgeously done – breathtaking. The sequel, which is equally beautifully filmed, deals with a settling of scores – revenge and retribution (all undertaken by the beautiful daughter, of course) – the book does better at this part, I think. It was just a fraction less enchanting than the first movie, but essential viewing nonetheless and pivotal in terms of tying up all the loose ends. I loved them! Subtitled since these are French language films.

For readers, the books are available translated into English, as Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring – author, Marcel Pagnol. I’d recommend reading the books first and seeing the films afterwards. (MH – you might enjoy the plot and subplots, and the descriptive writing – skulduggery at its finest!) Both novels and movies are top class, IMHO.

"wire in the blood", UK detective series,

stories centre around Psychologist-cum-profiler Dr.Anthony Hill in his search for serial killers....
no-one makes detective thrillers like the Brits, theyre the best in the genre IMO and this is no exception....
stars Robson Green as Dr.Hill....

as a footnote to Robson Green:
Robson is an actor, extreme fisherman and singer,
he has appeared in countless UK tv series/movies....
he has his own "extreme fishing" show on tv....
his version of "unchained melody" reached #1 on the UK charts and spent 7wks there back in 1995 as part of a duo called Robson & Jerome, that single was the biggest selling single in the UK in 1995 and was the single responsible for keeping Oasis' "wonderwall" at #2 in the charts out there!

I cant remember the name of it, but I saw a documentary on the weekend about the Nazi concentration camp in Poland called Sobibor...
there were several survivor telling their story's along with archival footage etc...

the documentary centred around the 1943 mass breakout but the Jews, sadly only fifty of them avoided capture and death, I guess this was their story
of survival...

a very good programme indeed,

and no matter how many times I see a programme like this about what the Nazi's did, and even the fact that ive been to Dachau I am still horrified by
the brutality, cruelty and calculated extermination that a group of people can inflict on others...
(no different to IS/ISIS/ISIL really, which is why the world needs to stand together to destroy this modern day Nazi-ism!)

"5 flights up" movie:
stars Morgan Freeman and Dianne Keaton:

synopsis:

Academy Award winners Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton star in this heartwarming story about a happily married couple, Ruth and Alex Carver, who have decided to cash in on their sought-after Brooklyn apartment. After enlisting the help of Ruth's niece, real estate agent Lily (Cynthia Nixon), they're about to embark on a whirlwind weekend they never imagined! As a series of crazy events unfold and offers on the apartment fly, they'll find their unwavering love tested in surprising ways – and ultimately discover a whole new lease on life!

my view:

funny at times, but didn't really go anywhere...
ultimate undertone was "be happy with what you've got in life"
I was a bit underwhelmed overall, but hey....it was Morgan Freeman

rating: 2.5/5 (for the movie) but once again...5/5 for Morgan Freeman!

STAR WARS episode VII: the force awakens.

at the cinema....

no spoilers from me incase youre going to see it at some point...
very, very good, up there with the three original movies IMO...
very camp/corny one liners like the originals, lots of action also.
some questions answered from 'episode VI-return of the jedi',
and others left open as the series continues in 2017 with episode VIII.

4/5 from me.
