MYSTIC RIVER

A SUPERB THRILLER STARRING TIM ROBBINS,SEAN PENN AND KEVIN BACON, AND UNDER THE
DIRECTION OF CLINT EASTWOOD....
IM NOT SURE WHY I HAVENT SEEN THIS ONE PREVIOUSLY AS IM A HUGE FAN OF EASTWOOD MOVIES
AND OF THE ONES HE DIRECTS/PRODUCES ALSO...
IMO,
THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN SINCE "THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION" AND SLIGHTLY MORE RECENTLY
"GRAN TORINO"

its not very often i give full marks to a movie but htis one thoroughly deserves its 5/5 from me

HERE'S AMAZONS FULL TAKE ON THIS ONE:

[h=3]Product Description[/h]Clint Eastwood directs this gritty Academy Award-winning drama based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. Set in the Irish community of Boston, it tells the story of three childhood friends who have drifted apart over the years owing to a violent and disturbing experience they shared as children, and are forcibly reunited many years later following another tragic event. When ex-con Jimmy Markum's (Sean Penn) 19-year-old daughter Katie is murdered, the homicide detectives assigned to the case are Whitney Powers (Laurence Fishburne) and Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon). Behind the scenes, Jimmy asks two of his relatives, the Savage brothers, to mount their own investigation, and the finger of suspicion begins to point to the final person in the childhood trio, Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), who is now a broken man.

[h=3]From Amazon.co.uk[/h]Superior acting, writing and direction are on impressive display in the Oscar-winning Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's 24th directorial outing and one of the finest films of 2003. Sharply adapted by LA Confidential Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland from the novel by Dennis Lehane, this chilling mystery revolves around three boyhood friends in working-class Boston--played as adults by Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon. They're drawn together by a crime from the past and a murder (of the Penn character's 19-year-old daughter) in the present. These dual tragedies arouse a vicious cycle of suspicion, guilt and repressed anxieties, primed to explode with devastating and unpredictable results. Eastwood is perfectly in tune with this brooding material, giving his flawless cast (including Laura Linney, Marcia Gay Harden and Laurence Fishburne) ample opportunity to plumb the depths of a resonant human tragedy, leading to an ambiguous ending that qualifies Mystic River for contemporary classic status.

It was a superior movie, made from a superior novel. All of Dennis Lehane's novels are well worth your time. 2 others have been made into movies (Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island) and his newest is in tune with these times even though set in WW II, bouncing as it does between Cuba and the center of Cubanismo in Florida (Miami is a Johnny-come-lately for that).: http://dennislehane.com/

GONE BABY,GONE

another Dennis Lehane adaption....
not as good as "mystic river" or "shutter island" but still pretty good....
i give this one 3.5/5

here's amazon's take on the movie:

[h=2]Reviews[/h][h=3]Product Description[/h]Tense detective thriller, directed by Ben Affleck, about a small-time private investigator hired to find a kidnapped girl. Living and working in a run-down, impoverished district of Boston, Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck), along with his partner Angela (Michelle Monaghan), investigates the cases nobody else wants. When four-year-old Amanda McCready (Madeline O'Brian) disappears from her drug addict mother's house, the local police investigation, led by Capt. Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman), comes up short. Hired by Amanda's aunt because they know the area and the locals so well, Patrick and Angela set out to uncover the truth, but soon find themselves caught up in a web of lies and corruption that threatens their relationship.

[h=3]From Amazon.co.uk[/h]For his initial offering as director, Ben Affleck returns to the site of his first Oscar: South Boston (he and Matt Damon shared the award for Good Will Hunting). Hot on the heels of his moving turn in Hollywoodland, Affleck's Dennis Lehane adaptation marks one of the more seamless actor-to-filmmaker transitions in recent years. Ostensibly, a procedural about the search for a missing child, class and corruption emerge as his primary concerns. First off, there's low-rent private eye Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck, equally adept in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford). Then there's the girl's drug mule mother, Helene (Amy Ryan, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead). She and Patrick grew up in Dorchester, but he took a different path, setting up an agency with his girlfriend, Angie (Michelle Monaghan). Helene's aunt, Bea (Amy Madigan), hires the duo to augment the investigation, and they team up with Captain Doyle (Morgan Freeman) and Detective Bressant (Madigan's husband, Ed Harris). The authorities don't appreciate the interference, but Patrick knows how to get the local populace talking, and he soon finds there's more to the story than anyone could possibly imagine. Hard-hitting, but never soft-headed, the evocative end result proves Affleck has a flair for this directing thing and that his little brother can carry a major motion picture with aplomb. Gone Baby Gone belongs on the list of great Boston crime dramas, along with The Departed and Mystic River, Clint Eastwood’s take on Lehane

As a footnote i also picked up a secondhand copy of a Dennis Lehane novel today for $4......"a drink before the war", i will let you guys know what i think of it once i have read it.
