RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 31-01-2018

NEIL YOUNG & PROMISE OF THE REAL  "the visitor"  cd,  2017:

Neil's thirty-nineth studio album as a solo artist...
his eleventh in the last ten years....
more listenable than most of the other releases over that period...
some distorted electric tracks, some acoustically folky also...
on his soapbox again, usual suspects again, big business, the environment but also
another subject is in his crosshairs....President Trump, and that subject features on a handful of tracks...
so, some good stuff on here, and I did say 'good' and not 'great', its passable....

its sad that the best song on the album is a rehash of "unknown legend" rom "harvest moon" back in the early 1990s...
im talking musically, almost note for note copy, not the lyrics or vocals...

LORDE  "melodrama"  cd,  2017:

Kiwi born Lorde's second studio set....
not as sparse with the instruments as the debut set "pure heroine".....
infact, several of the tracks could have been Taylor Swift songs....
maybe her friendship with HRH Taylor rubbed off on her....
a far better album than the debut with became monotonous after a few listens...
this one is more melodious, only problem I have with it is the use of the f-bombs which come
out of the blue at regular intervals, totally not needed IMO!...
without those nonsense f-bombs this would have been an album I love, but sadly it
loses a few points for it!

from the album, my favourite track, and lead off single:

THE MOTELS  "all four one"  vinyl,  1982:

US New Wave group....
Martha Davis has a vocal quality similar to Toyah Wilcox at times which can be annoying...
its funny how musical tastes change because I used to really like this album, but now, nah!...
ten tracks, five singles released, nine originals with one cover, the Goffin/King track "he hit me(and it felt like a kiss)",
was never a fan of that song anyway...
still like the two hit singles "take the L" and "only the lonely"...
had actually forgotten about their late seventies hit "total control", will have to go and YT it
after if posted this one...

one of the two track that I still like:

PAUL WELLER  "wake up the nation"  cd, 2010:

time to visit another old friend...
tenth solo set....
ex-Jam bassist rock up here, first time Weller has worked with an ex bandmate
since the band split in 1982...
tried and true formula here but theres some branching out into almost avant-garde sound
at times...
a good album.

my favourite track, a very Walker Brothers sounding tune:

PAUL KELLY & THE COLOURED GIRLS  "under the sun"  cd, 1987:

Paul's fifth of twenty-three, I own around half of his albums...
his biggest selling album and only one to go platinum here...
I often refer to him as the "Aussie Dylan" because he is a poet and a storyteller,
add to that the fact he can sing, albeit, with a nasally twang for the most part...
a consistently good artist who rarely lets his fans down with sub par music...
a few alt rockers, some folk and tinges of country on here...
a very good album indeed!

love this one:

HOODOO GURUS "crank"  cd,  1994:
Aussie alt-rock band...
sixth album, nine released, I own seven...
a move away from their catchy rock sounds overall, but it still shows up on half the tracks...
album only reached gold status here but was their highest charting one reaching #2 on the charts...
four singles off it, all made the lower reaches of the singles chart from memory...
had these guys been from the US or UK I think theyd have had a huge audience, but alas, it appears
it was only the University types that were attracted to them elsewhere...

from the album, a blistering live version of the lead off single:

PAUL WELLER  "as is now"  cd, 2005

another old friend from way back when...

eighth solo set....
a failure by his standards by only peaking at #4 on the UK charts...
the last real Weller sounding album to me, he started to get a bit experimental after this one...
some rock, a couple of piano ballads, an acoustic folk tune...
much better than I remember it to be (I mean I liked it, but now I love it)

from the album, the singles:

"from the floorboards up"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty8PkR7wobQ  live

"come on/lets go"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6alOVMyVHY  live

"here's the good news"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDTxESYhvdE  video

and my favourite, one of the acoustic folky tracks:

[Image: 220px-Stop_Making_Sense_-_Talking_Heads.jpg]

TALKING HEADS  "stop making sense"  cd, 1984:

live set...
the soundtrack to their movie which I have never seen?!?...
great collection of songs on here, superb live set...
all class!

from the album, their greatest song done acoustically:

RE: What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-02-2018

[Image: 220px-Miley_Cyrus_-_Younger_Now_%28Offic...ver%29.png]

MILEY CYRUS  "younger now"  cd,  2017:

looks like our Miley has all grown up at long last!...
her music has matured...
almost rock on places, country in others, but it was neither at the same time so alternative is
where I decided to post it...
a good solid collection of songs on this one...
even her Godmother, Dolly Parton, turns up on one track to sing a long with Miley...

the lead off single, title track and my favourite track:

[Image: 220px-The_stranglers_greatest_hits_1977-1990.jpg]

THE STRANGLERS  "greatest hits 1977-1990"  cd  1990

was unaware the guys are still around...
haven't released an album in six years but theyre still touring...
fifteen track compilation...
not as comprehensive as the vinyl one I have, but still okay...
contains their so called "essential" singles from all eras of their career...
a nice reminder of the music I loved back in the day. lots of memories flooding back
with this one..!

I could have posted any one of the tracks from this one, except for the abysmal
cover of "all day and all of the night" and i'd have been happy but I chose this one
on this occasion:
