#401 - Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City - 1966

running recap for me - 3's=51, 2's=39, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful
Written by John Sebastian, Steve Boone, Mark Sebastian
Produced by Erik Jacobsen
Chart action: #1 US, #4 UK, #1 Canada

the players:
John Sebastian – lead and background vocals, guitar
Steve Boone – electric and double bass, piano, organ
Joe Butler – drums, percussion, background vocals
Zal Yanovsky – electric and acoustic guitar, background vocals

Remember thinking it was quite a change in their sound at the time, and it had to grow on me.
It didn't take long. From the groups third album of which John Sebastian says there was a
deliberate attempt to have a variety of styles to keep from falling in a rut. Styles were said
by the critics to include pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk. John's brother Mark wrote
most of the lyrics, with some revisions from John and Steve. Don't care much for the car horns
and jackhammer sounds in here. No credits for who played those instruments.

Lyrics

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

#400 - Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving - 1964

running recap for me - 3's=52, 2's=39, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Four Tops
Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland
Produced by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland
Chart action: #11 US

the players:
Levi Stubbs - lead vocal
Renaldo Benson - backing vocal
Lawrence Payton - backing vocal
Abdul Fakir - backing vocal
Funk Brothers - the music

That Motown hit factory just kept churnin' them out. And most seem to be written by that same
team. The Temptations had more hits but the Tops were just as good. This was the groups first
single from their debut album, with many to follow. Johnny Rivers also had a #3 hit with the
song in 1967, but you gotta give it to the original.

Lyrics

Baby, I need your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'

Although you're never near
Your voice I often hear
Another day, another night
I long to hold you tight
'Cause I'm so lonely

Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Some say it's a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
If it means havin' you to keep
'Cause lately I've been losin' sleep

Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Empty nights echo your name
Whoa, sometimes I wonder
Will I ever be the same?
Oh yeah

When you see me smile, you know
Things have gotten worse
Any smile you might see
Has all been rehearsed

Darlin', I can't go on without you
This emptiness won't let me live without you
This loneliness inside me, darlin'
Makes me feel half alive

Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Holland/Dozier/Holland were brilliant songwriters IMO, and The Four Tops were the greatest Motown group of the mid 1960s IMO...love those guys and love that song immensely!!!!

also for your memory banks....Mary Wells is my favourite Motown female artist from the same period

Very pretty song from The King!
Music Head Wrote:#403 - Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling In Love - 1961

running recap for me - 3's=50, 2's=38, 1's=10
this one - ***
from the album: Blue Hawaii
Written by George Weiss, Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore
Produced by Joseph Lilley
Chart action: #2 US, #1 UK

the players:
Elvis Presley - vocal
Jordanaires - backing vocals

One of his 50 signature songs, lol. I was questioning the way RS had the title worded, but
looking at a pic of the actual record, that's what it says, so I stand corrected. An 18th
century Italian tune updated and given to Elvis for the film Blue Hawaii.

Lyrics

Wise men said, "Only fools rush in"
But I can't help falling in love with you

Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you

Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

Take my hand
Take my whole life, too
For I can't help falling in love with you

For I can't help falling in love with you

Popular song in its' day...lots of airplay...I like the song
Music Head Wrote:#402 - Five Stairsteps - Ooh Child - 1970

running recap for me - 3's=50, 2's=39, 1's=10

from the album: Stairsteps
Written by Stan Vincent
Produced by Stan Vincent
Chart action: #8 US

the players:
Alohe Burke
Keni Burke
Dennis Burke
James Burke
Clarence Burke

Pretty enough, but you can't say much for the lyrics. Chicago brothers and sister sort of like
the Jackson 5. Managed by their daddy, sound familiar? Discovered in a talent show at a local
theater and signed by Curtis Mayfield to his newly formed label. A few other charting singles
on the r&b chart but basically another one hit wonder.

Lyrics

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter

Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll be brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll be brighter

Some day, yeah
We'll get it together and we'll get it all done

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things'll get brighter
Right now, right now

#399 - Temptations - Just My Imagination - 1971

running recap for me - 3's=52, 2's=40, 1's=10
this one - **
from the album: Sky's The Limit
Written by Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong
Produced by Norman Whitfield
Chart action: #1 US

the players:
Eddie Kendricks - lead vocal
Paul Williams - backing vocal
Dennis Edwards - backing vocal
Otis Williams - backing vocal
Melvin Franklin - backing vocal
Funk Brothers - the music

Never one of my favorite Temps songs. Eddie Kendricks' last run with the group, as he would
depart for a solo career. Kendricks and Otis Williams had developed a bitter feud which had
carried into the studio and caused friction among all members. The song is said to be a return
to the groups original sound after going all psychedelic on their fans. I was among the few
that accepted the new sound as well. Most notable cover was the Stones on their Some Girls
album in 1978.

Lyrics

Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by.
I say to myself, you're such a lucky guy.
To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true.
Out of all the fellas in the world, she belongs to me.

But it was just my 'magination, running away with me.
It was just my 'magination, running away with me.

(Soon) Soon we'll be married and raise a family. (Oh, yeah)
A cozy little home out in the country with two children, maybe three.
I tell you, I can visualize it all. This couldn't be a dream, for too real it all seems.

But it was just my 'magination, once again.
Running away with me.
Tell you it was just my 'magination,
Running away with me.

Every night on my knees I pray.

Dear Lord, hear my plea.
Don't ever let another take her love from me.
Or I will surely die. Hmm

(Her love is) heavenly.
When her arms enfold me.
I hear a tender rhapsody.
But in reality, she doesn't even know me.

Just my 'magination, once again.
Running away with me.
Oh, tell you it was just my 'magination,
Running away with me.

I never met her but I can't forget her.
Just my 'magination,
Ooo yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Running away with me.

Ooo, just my 'magination running away with me.
She's in my mind and hard to find.
Just my 'magination.
