Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 17-01-2013 #401 - Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City - 1966 running recap for me - 3's=51, 2's=39, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful Written by John Sebastian, Steve Boone, Mark Sebastian Produced by Erik Jacobsen Chart action: #1 US, #4 UK, #1 Canada the players: John Sebastian – lead and background vocals, guitar Steve Boone – electric and double bass, piano, organ Joe Butler – drums, percussion, background vocals Zal Yanovsky – electric and acoustic guitar, background vocals Remember thinking it was quite a change in their sound at the time, and it had to grow on me. It didn't take long. From the groups third album of which John Sebastian says there was a deliberate attempt to have a variety of styles to keep from falling in a rut. Styles were said by the critics to include pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk. John's brother Mark wrote most of the lyrics, with some revisions from John and Steve. Don't care much for the car horns and jackhammer sounds in here. No credits for who played those instruments. And most seem to be written by that same team. The Temptations had more hits but the Tops were just as good. This was the groups first single from their debut album, with many to follow. Johnny Rivers also had a #3 hit with the song in 1967, but you gotta give it to the original. Lyrics Baby, I need your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Although you're never near Your voice I often hear Another day, another night I long to hold you tight 'Cause I'm so lonely Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Some say it's a sign of weakness For a man to beg Then weak I'd rather be If it means havin' you to keep 'Cause lately I've been losin' sleep Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Empty nights echo your name Whoa, sometimes I wonder Will I ever be the same? Oh yeah When you see me smile, you know Things have gotten worse Any smile you might see Has all been rehearsed Darlin', I can't go on without you This emptiness won't let me live without you This loneliness inside me, darlin' Makes me feel half alive Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Baby, I need your lovin' Got to have all your lovin' Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 18-01-2013 Holland/Dozier/Holland were brilliant songwriters IMO, and The Four Tops were the greatest Motown group of the mid 1960s IMO...love those guys and love that song immensely!!!! also for your memory banks....Mary Wells is my favourite Motown female artist from the same period Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 18-01-2013 Very pretty song from The King! Eddie Kendricks' last run with the group, as he would depart for a solo career. Kendricks and Otis Williams had developed a bitter feud which had carried into the studio and caused friction among all members. The song is said to be a return to the groups original sound after going all psychedelic on their fans. I was among the few that accepted the new sound as well. Most notable cover was the Stones on their Some Girls album in 1978. Lyrics Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by. I say to myself, you're such a lucky guy. To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true. Out of all the fellas in the world, she belongs to me. But it was just my 'magination, running away with me. It was just my 'magination, running away with me. (Soon) Soon we'll be married and raise a family. (Oh, yeah) A cozy little home out in the country with two children, maybe three. I tell you, I can visualize it all. This couldn't be a dream, for too real it all seems. But it was just my 'magination, once again. Running away with me. Tell you it was just my 'magination, Running away with me. Every night on my knees I pray. Dear Lord, hear my plea. Don't ever let another take her love from me. Or I will surely die. Hmm (Her love is) heavenly. When her arms enfold me. I hear a tender rhapsody. But in reality, she doesn't even know me. Just my 'magination, once again. Running away with me. Oh, tell you it was just my 'magination, Running away with me. I never met her but I can't forget her. Just my 'magination, Ooo yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Running away with me. Ooo, just my 'magination running away with me. She's in my mind and hard to find. Just my 'magination. Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 19-01-2013 Another soul classic...I like!
