Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 12-10-2012 Jerome Wrote:Just found it - Linda Paloma - used to play this a lot. Here we go http://youtu.be/4wr4jIWl654 see.....from The Pretender, his best album thanks for that beautiful Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 12-10-2012 #495 - Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar - 1971 me - *** from the album Sticky Fingers Written by Mick Jagger/Keith Richards Produced by Jimmy Miller Chart action: #1 Billboard Pop, #2 UK Singles, #1 Canada the players: Mick Jagger - lead vocals Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals Mick Taylor - electric, acoustic and slide guitar Charlie Watts - drums Bill Wyman - bass guitar Second entry from the Glimmer twins. A tally may be too hard to keep up with. Lead single from the zipper album. Mick put this together with his then girlfriend Marsha Hunt in mind. Yes she is black and that inter racial thing was still controversial at the time. B-side was Bitch which could have been a hit on it's own. Raunchy lyrics and pushing that envelope was a Stones constant. I don't remember it but I would think a lot of American radio stations had some hesitancy in putting Brown Sugar on their playlist. Race and sex were still somewhat taboo subjects at the time. In a Rolling Stone interview in 1995, Jagger said if he had written the song then he would probably censor himself. That seems a strange statement to make 25 years after. Lyrics Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields Sold in a market down in New Orleans Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright Hear him with the women just around midnight Brown sugar how come you taste so good? Brown sugar just like a young girl should Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop House boy knows that he's doing alright You shoulda heard him just around midnight Brown sugar how come you taste so good, now? Brown sugar just like a young girl should, now Ah, get along, brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby? Ah, got me feelin' now, brown sugar just like a black girl should I bet your mama was a tent show queen And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like You shoulda heard me just around midnight Brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby? Ah, brown sugar just like a young girl should, yeah I said yeah, yeah, yeah, woo How come you...how come you taste so good? Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo Just like a...just like a black girl should Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo Looking Back At Some Classics - TraceNspace - 12-10-2012 Brown Sugar has probably got to be my least favorite Stones song! I must have been out of the loop at the time. Never heard it before. Don't care to hear it again. Says it is one of his signature songs. The remix is used as a distinction from the other Ignition track on the album which is not related to this one. It's not my thing but it may be yours. Probably not though. Looking Back At Some Classics - CRAZY-HORSE - 13-10-2012 definately not my thing neither mate!!!! i love Eminem as you know, like 2pac,D-12 and Notorious b.i.g, am partial to Jay-Z also, but thats about as far as it goes for me Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 13-10-2012 The sax in Brown Sugar is great! ...very good raunchy song! CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:Brown Sugar is brilliant IMO, love everything about it...but i dont go to bars/clubs so i only get to hear it when it comes out on cd nowadays Looking Back At Some Classics - SteveO - 13-10-2012 nope not for me CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:definately not my thing neither mate!!!! Looking Back At Some Classics - LMD - 14-10-2012 Music Head Wrote:#494 - R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix) - 2002 Not my thing either, but its a lot better than some of his other stuff. He did a 24 part mini-rap opera thing called "Trapped in the Closet." The musical quality was pretty much non-existent and the lyrical content was lacking even more than the music. =\ I, of course, played all 24 parts in a row one Saturday a few years ago, driving my roommate to the point of near suicide. Because I'm a good friend/roommate. Just as a fun aside. Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 14-10-2012 #493 - MGMT - Time To Pretend - 2008 me - *** from the album Oracular Spectacular Written by Ben Goldwasser, Andrew VanWyngarden Produced by Dave Fridmann Chart action: #23 Billboard Modern Rock, #35 UK Singles the players: only these 2 listed so it must have all been done with that studio trickery Andrew Vanwyngarden – lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitars, keyboards, drums, percussion Ben Goldwasser – vocals, keyboards rhythm guitars, percussion, synths and samples Can't believe this one was not a bigger hit than it was. At least RS recognizes it as a great song. Never heard this album, but I did hear the follow up, from which nothing could come close to this song. Maybe a one hit wonder for me. Lyrics are superb and I can handle the electronic side for a change. About pretending to be rock stars and leaving the old life behind. The song was originally done for the bands ep, but was re-recorded for this debut album. This is a Brooklyn NY band but has seen more success in the foreign market than here. I said back in the first post for this thread that I was sticking to audio only clips, but I just have to make an exception on occasion, as long as they don't stray too far from the recorded version. Too many live clips that should be viewed. This for one. Lyrics I'm Feelin rough I'm Feelin raw I'm in the prime of my life. Let's make some music make some money find some models for wives. I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin and **** with the stars. You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars. This is our decision to live fast and die young. We've got the vision, now let's have some fun. Yeah it's overwhelming, but what else can we do? Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute? Forget about our mothers and our friends. We were fated to pretend. I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms. I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world. I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home. Yeah I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone. But there is really nothing, nothing we can do. Love must be forgotten. Life can always start up anew. The models will have children, we'll get a divorce, We'll find some more models, Everything must run its course. We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end. We were fated to pretend. Yeah yeah yeah |
