Strange Little Girls (2001) "Pierced from below Souls of my treacherous past Betrayed by many Now ornaments dripping above" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuANh-F12JU It's certainly an interesting rendition. Why higher than some of the songs already on the list, you ask? Well, because it has just the atmosphere I think it needs. I like a good atmosphere. 211: She's Your Cocaine From the Choir Girl Hotel (1998) "Bring your sister Bring your sister If you can't handle it She says control it Then she says don't control it Then she says you're controlling The way she makes you crawl" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-20w5YIZnI Odd, yes. This was another that I never liked, but it grew a little bit closer. The sections are quite interesting, almost similar to Rose Dover, although that song came out 16 years later. Then again, my songs don't loop too often... 210: Here, in my Head Crucify EP (1992) "So maybe Thomas Jefferson Wasn't born in your back yard Like you have said and Maybe I'm just the horizon you run to when She has left you there, you are Here, in my head" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWRnMwI-F4Q Early 90's Tori... wish I was alive then :'( I wish I could say that I miss that Tori, but I guess I can't. So beautiful, that I don't want to rank it as low as 210, but I have to, because there are more coming, that I like... even more?? To Venus and Back (1999) "I'm aware what the rules are But you know that I will run You know I will follow you Over Silbury Hill Through the solar field You know that I will follow you" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RTfCaj6beg I have similar comments for this and Sleeps With Butterflies. I think I prefer this one a bit more because it still has a bit of the unique flavor. I'm not sure the background techno-y sound really fits the song though. 208: After All Strange Little Girl EP (2001) "Man is an obstacle Sad as a clown Oh by jingo So hold on to nothing And he won't let you down Oh by jingo" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ikTaxOFXu4 This is a very beautiful cover of a David Bowie song. I'd just say, with her usual uniqueness, I think she could've made the awkward key changes a little less forced, and maybe found a way to flow into them. 207: Thank you Crucify EP (1992) "If the sun refused to shine I would still be lovin' you Mountains crumble to the sea There would still be you and me" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d2I8bjrAcw Thank you for making music Tori. That is all for now. All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - Jerome - 12-10-2015 I thought 'Thank You' was by Led Zeppelin??!?? All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - TheLaserTrap - 12-10-2015 Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that It is a cover of Led Zeppelin's song, yes. Thanks for pointing that out.

Little Earthquakes (1992) Tales of a Librarian (2003) Gold Dust (2012) "Years go by Will I still be waiting For somebody else To understand Years go by If I'm stripped of my beauty And the orange clouds Raining in my head" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt9IkhdRK30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=120L80DH8qQ Yeah I know, there's not that much of a difference between the LE version and the GD version, except for the GD version being WORSE. It loses the dynamic, and the singing surprisingly isn't as good. Also, this song is a little overplayed, which is why I ranked it as low as this. It's always the same song. Never changed. If she played it and it was slightly different, I would probably like it a bit more. 205: New Age Strange Little Girls (2001) "Looking at my hands today Look to me that they're made of ivory I had a funny call today Someone died and someone married You know that it's my fancy to make it with Franky and Nancy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmAuYvkjF8Q There's just not enough ensemble for it to be a piece for the whole band. The part that features every part of her band feels very sudden and forced, the guitar in the chorus in particular. It was certainly an interesting start to the album full of covers. 204: Teenage Hustling American Doll Posse (2007) "Maybe the riddle of this accident Goes back to your gossip With a ferocious strategy You play wounded in his cockpit But I think you forgot my days Of teenage hustling" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N1NPOKhxC0 The first time the doll "Pip" had a song on the album. From this song we can see Pip's personality quite well. Without picking apart the lyrics or anything, the music shows her personality quite well. I mean, those guitars are pretty angry-sounding in a way. It's certainly not a bad song, but well, you know, it's not the sort of thing I'm into in terms of music. This may mean the placement is a little bit biased, but I did also take the writing and unique level into account for this. It's quite different compared to most Tori songs. Scarlet's Hidden Treasures EP (2004) "Your version coercion My version elixir of quietude Line up the dots Music to spy to Music to die to" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX5NDognOWw Yes, this is my least favorite song originally from the Scarlet's Walk tour. It's still a pretty decent song, but it's one I actually find forgettable. I mean, there are a lot of B-sides out there but out of the ones I can call decent (that's a lot of them, the ones that aren't are all BFP and UTP B-sides which were never really that great) I could probably say this is the most forgotten B-side for me. Wonder what she was thinking when she wrote this song though. Something like, "I'm gonna make a groovy tune and put some super secretive lyrics"? Yeah that sounds about right. And for Posse Bonus she thought the same thing but instead of making the lyrics secretive, she decided to make them annoying and ruin the song completely... 202: Mr. Bad Man American Doll Posse (2007) "There's a gold star On a gendarme So she asked him 'Hey can you hold my song? It's the one piece that I got left So hide it well' she said" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzNuqs_ELXs Oh, but why is this song number 7 on the list of the worst Tori songs? Just because you find that "doo doo doo" chorus annoying? ANNOYING? Honestly, with the spirit of the rest of the song, I think it works quite well. The ensemble of the song is almost... cute, actually. 201: Angie Crucify EP (1992) "Angie, you're beautiful But ain't it time we said goodbye And the dreams we held so close Seemed to all go up in smoke Let me whisper in your ear Angie, Angie Where will it lead us from here" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsYRxXv8A-E Her piano covers from this era were absolutely perfect. This one is a cover of The Rolling Stones. And it's really darn good. Next time we'll be in the top 200... All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - TheLaserTrap - 27-10-2015 200: Space Dog
Under the Pink (1994) "Deck the halls, I'm young again I'm you again Racing turtles The grapefruit is winning Seems I keep getting This story twisted So where's Neil When you need him" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cMQcOtETGk A lot of people like the song, just for the piano part. I do like the song, and although the bass voice in the first part is weird, I actually like it for both parts. There's just one problem - they don't fit together. 199: I i e e e From the Choir Girl Hotel "With your E's And your ease And I do one more I know we're dying And there's no sign of a parachute" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWvjnNm52is *Gets threatened with machetes and chainsaws* ...hear me out. Yes, this is another popular one that a lot of people would disagree with its place on the list. I just think it's all a bit too... detached, if you know what I'm saying. I used to think the lyrics were stupid too, but the reason why she wrote this song is actually rather creepy. She told us this at storytellers in 1998 [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGA4p6uxxRE ] (Sorry for the subtitles). I did like the new version she did in 2014, Although I know a lot of people were disappointed because it lost all its dramatic feeling. [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks1-m61M9PM ] 198: Strange Little Girl Strange Little Girls (2001) "She didn't know how to live In a town that was rough It didn't take long before She knew she'd had enough Walking home in Her wrapped up world She survived but she's feeling old And she found all things cold" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu3IVh70Ugk 2001's cover album was pretty much the last of her good covers unfortunately. This is a good cover with the band, and it does all fit together, unlike most of New Age. Not a bad song to name the album after, but there are quite a few more I prefer on the album. (Strange Little Girl was originally written by The Stranglers.) All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - TheLaserTrap - 29-10-2015 197: You Can Bring Your Dog
American Doll Posse (2007) "I'm not making any promises You'll be too busy boy To sue for her damages I'm not making any promises But you still that something pretty boy You still got that something as a man You still got something Of this I know" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_KH-HqpHBg More rock Tori! She had a few of those in this album. This song is sung by the doll Santa. I don't really have much I want to say about this one, so I guess I'm moving on. 196: Giant's Rolling Pin Unrepentant Geraldines "In case we have Rolled our little world too flat When the giant's rolling pin Will roll the truth out So that the whole world can dig in To Beth and Marlene's pies" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEqoMMX8gxs It's not really that bad, it just doesn't feel like a Tori song to me. Kind of like how the whole Night of Hunters album doesn't feel like Tori Amos at all (And how the Gold Dust album shouldn't exist at all). It almost feels too upbeat in a way. Still, even to be ranked as "low" as 196, I do like this song a lot. 195: Caught a Lite Sneeze Boys For Pele (1996) "Building tumbling down Didn't know our love was so small Couldn't stand it all Mr. St. John just bring your son" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6oecf7JPZo *Gets threatened with machetes and chainsaws* ...hear me out. It's effectively a break-up album, so there are a few songs with lyrics like this. It's not really my jam but this one has a brilliant tune. I actually like the use of harpsichord in this one! It's the only song that I do. I think for the main melody, the harpsichord actually works better than piano for this one. This had the best ensemble of the album, even if the percussion isn't real drums. It does feel rather techno-y, almost a sneak peek for the next album, where Hotel would be a sneak peek at the album after that. I just think this song is way too overplayed. Honestly, as a piano solo, this song really bores me. Overall, as an album, BFP was a big hit for me the first time I heard it. The second time it really started to grow away. Completely the opposite to what Venus and Back did for me - To Venus and Back is now my 3rd favorite album (2nd being The Beekeeper and 1st being Scarlet's Walk). All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - TheLaserTrap - 11-11-2015 194: Devils and Gods
American Doll Posse (2007) "Devils and gods, now that's an idea But if we believe that it's they who decide That's the ultimate detractor of crimes 'Cause devils and gods, they are you and I" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LpE8g0jh0k Yeah I know, the lyrics seem kind of pathetic and it seems so unusually short. But I still quite like this short song. Of course, I always thought it should have been longer. Tori probably thought of that herself, as she extended it in the live shows. [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCxH8Ua3qew ] 193: Doughnut Song Boys For Pele (1996) "Devoted Satellite Happy for you And I am sure that I hate you Two sons too many Too many able fires" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOdve3NZTfU Interesting. Being a break-up album it's kind of what you might expect. The tune along with the other ensemble instruments is quite well written. 192: Sweet Sangria Scarlet's Walk (2002) "I know You know every desperado And sharp shooter In the west You say that I can't see behind The mask of those who call themselves The good guys in this" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lxm_S3lig48 All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed - Wander - 13-11-2015 I quite like Tori Amos. Interesting to see this sort of a personal list although my preferences already seem to diverge quite a bit as you have already gone through several songs that would probably make my top 50, such as: 248. Beauty Queen 245. Muhammed My Friend 228. Hotel 221. Mr. Zebra 218. Horses 209. 1,000 Oceans 200. Space Dog 199. Iieee 195. Caught a Lite Sneeze 193. Doughnut song Like, I would seriously see this as a pretty solid list of favourite songs rather than bottom fodder from Tori! At least if you combine Beauty Queen/Horses into one like on the album. But I'm interested to see where you are going with the top picks. |
