OTIS REDDING "the great otis redding sings soul ballads" cd, 1965
Otis' second album, originally released in 1965, i have a late 1990s remastered cd of the album,same track listing and thankfully no so-called 'bonus tracks'...i hate those things!
as the title suggests its full of soul ballads, probably half are covers of old things from the 40s and 50s including a couple of obscure Sam Cooke b-sides....the rest are self composed tracks by this soul man!
unusually for me(with a love of all things Otis Redding) there are a couple i still dont like much, not sure as to why, just dont like 'em. probably my favourite Otis track is on this one in "mr.pitiful", which incidently was a nickname given to him back in the day by his producer.
nothing on here like the slick,smooth 'dock of the bay', just real raw talent and emotion, like my other favourite solu man Wilson Pickett.
rates higher than allmusic's 1.8 but not by any means one of his best albums IMO.
R.I.P Otis, you went way too early man!

Fitting I should pull out Percy Sledge on the day A Man Loves A Woman comes up on Songpop. The man falls into the
one hit wonder category with that classic. Had a few other songs that hit the chart, but nothing would come close to
that one. Worked as an orderly in an Alabama hospital while performing on weekends in an r&b band until discovered
by record producer Quin Ivy. Percy was out of the gate with a #1, never to be equaled. The song was the first gold
record for Atlantic Records. This is the only thing I have by him. I guess it covers all of his singles. Only four
tracks on here I remember being singles. My favorite is not what you would think. That goes to his second highest
charting song, the #11 Take Time To Know Her. I just felt bad when the dude caught his woman kissing on another man.
Even the damn preacher tried to warn him. Nothing I don't like on here, with 3 love tracks, making it fall just
short of a love album. That one hit got Percy an induction into the r&r Hall Of Fame in 2005. Probably living
comfortably off the royalties from that one song.

not as good as Wlison or Otis IMO, but "when a man..." is one of the greatest soul songs ever IMO...also love "warm and tender love"

OUTKAST "the love below/speakerbox" cd,2003.
Outcast are basically two guys...Andre and Big Boi...
and this is a double set, basically two solo set IMO, the first,"speakerbox", is Big Boi doing his rap/hip hop material....the second disc,"the love below", is Andre showing off his r&b,soul,jazzy big band style...
not really impressed with Speakerbox, too much of a muchness rap crap IMO,of the nineteen tracks there are only seven that i like, and some of those are a bit questionable,guess i was being a bit sympathetic to the huge amount of "*'s"....
as for "the love below" disc, there are some very good tracks on this one,as previously stated, jazzy,bigband,soul, and real R&B here with only seven dislikes coming from the eighteen tracks.
features the massive hits "hey ya!" and "roses" from "the love below" disc and "the way you move" from the crap disc!
all up, a very patchy double set,would have made a reasonably good single set,but i guess two massive egos there needs to be two massive cds...bit like "the white album" in that respect,imagine how that album would have sounded if Pauls tracks were on one disc and johns on another?...would it have worked?,guess we'll never know!
